FS7: Exposing with Cine AI is very limited.

When using cine AI with manual lenses it appears the only way to set exposure is with lens itself. The camera Iris dial seems deactivated. Is there any other way to set exposure besides using the in camera ND dial?

I think you mean Cine IE, yes Histogram works. This is discussed here before so you should find the answer in this forum. I can't recollect the settings but it works.
Iris should work too. Problem might be your lens-adapter. And if you use manuals lenses, you can change Iris on the lens itself.

I would strongly recommend you Doug Jensens FS7 field guide. Most of your questions can be found there easilly. It almost seems Sony and Jensen have a deal: Sony makes bad manuals so that mr Jensen can sell his excellent books with all the info you need. :-)

I read the manuals. The information in them is non exhaustive, not precise and it seems the they released the camera as a work in progress. The audio menu is a mess. Also it is amazing how the menu was designed. Half of this stuff is unecessary... the other half is sprrad out for people to go looking for it. The audio menu is especially confusing and really limited. Channel 3 and 4 are useless. Channel 2 can not be made to automatically follow the aidio level of channel one with 20 percent lower level. Doug Jensen does not galk about the audio menu.

What??
I have pages and pages of detailed information in my field guide book about every audio menu, and a 15 minute chapter about audio settings and recommendations in my master class. If you don't want to take advanatge of those resources that is fine, but please don't say that I don't talk about them. BTW, you are embarasing yourself with your continued bashing of the FS7 just because you don't understand how it operates. Read the manual and get the camera out and take a couple of hours to learn the audio menus. It all makes sense. The camera does almost everything you say it doesn't do. And every menu is important for different setups and configurations. I suggest you learn your camera and stop asking others to spoon feed information to you every time you get frustrated. Does the Histogram work in CINE EI? That seems like something really easy to find out on your own, in probably less time than it took to post the question, doesn't it?

It would have been nice to use channel 3 and 4 in a better way than how it's implemented on the FS7 but having had a FS7 since 2014 I've never had any issues on how to operate the audio menu. The first time I think I just plugged in a microphone and adjust the level and I got good audio.

To answer the original question, like any camera there are 3 factors of exposure. In Cine IE mode, you rate the sensor but it's not baked into the file. You can still adjust shutter speed/angle and aperture. Aperture can be set with the camera if you are using a lens that has an electronic aperture and you have an adapter that communicates with the FS7.

Thank you. We are currently in production so time is tight. So I will look at the audio part of your master class this weekend. I just dont get the Level + Sides option. Why does anybody need to adjust levels in camera when you already have sides. I just dont get it.

Ehm... since when have you ever been able to adjust the iris of a manual lens with the camera? That's kind of the idea behind a manual lens... it has no motors inside for the camera to work with. Don't mean to disrespect, but I would think this was obvious... :S

That's also why most film crews run with a focus puller and small motors attached to the camera rig that control the focus / zoom / iris.

Exposing with Cine AI is very limited.

Indeed - how wonderful.

Just control it like a proper film camera with an 800-1200 stock onboard, iris on the lens and amount of ND, shutter set at 180.

No digging in menus, no silly non responsive iris wheel on the side that you cant find, no sony BS at all.

The less you have to touch the camera settings the more you can concentrate on your great content :)

I already answered this question on one of your other threads three or four days ago. And other people have pointed it out to you that I already answered this question. What I don't get is why you don't listen to the answers that have been given already from me and others. And what difference does the levle + sides function make anyway? The camera has many funcitons on it that you'll never want/need to use even when you understand them fully. This feature of the camera falls into that category. If you don't understand . . .then don't use it and move on. Why get hung up on it?

For your convenience, here is my answer again:
The ability to change the audio levels using a menu is so that you have the option of using the ASSIGNABLE DIAL on the grip and/or the IRIS DIAL on the side of the camera to change levels on the fly during handheld shooting. That's all there is to it.

no sh*t Sherlock. Thank God I sold my FS7 after 3 years of limitations.

WTH? If it's a manual lens, of course the iris dial won't work. Just rotate the GD lens iris ring.
Set your audio menu trim to the default -50 and get on with your life. Jeesh.
