FS5: Exposing the FS5

Hey all,

Shooting a job on the FS5 on Monday - first time using the camera and won't have an extensive amount of time to test it out, though I'm used to shooting F5/55, F3, and A7s.

What I'm looking for is any traps to look out for, and also anything in particular to watch out for exposure wise? Normally I rate the F5 at 1250, and F55 at 640. Is the FS5 more like those two cameras or can you stick at 3200 relatively okay?

I'll be shooting REC709 HD because we don't have the budget or time to grade this properly.

Any tips would be mucho appreciado

You'll be fine shooting rec709 with anything under 2500iso in HD. 1000iso looks great with little to no noise. The biggest problems people are having is pushing the iso in 4k and not shooting slog properly, but you won't have that issue since you won't be using either.

I second that. There is a 40 min chapter on exposure and a 45 min chapter on the paint menus and PP settings.
We found Doug's method of exposing for Slog with the FS5 < rather than Sonys > gave much better results and less noise in the shadow/dark areas.

This has been talked about quite a bit here because of the 8bit codec when shooting UHD, but even 10bit HD footage can suffer if you don't nail exposure.

But for your shoot, the training also offers PP settings for great footage without grading < or just mild adjustments >

The paint/profile options are nothing like the F5 or F3, but I think the PP's are similar to the A7s.

There are quite a few things about the camera operation in certain modes and menu settings that could trip you up if your new to the FS5, but no show stoppers.

If you are an experienced F5/55, F3, and A7s shooter, you'll have no problem finding your way around this little Sony gem.

If you are shooting in REC 709 and not S-LOG, be aware that the native ISO is 1000 in those modes, not 3200. Setting the camera to 3200 in REC 709 mode will definitely produce noise.
In my experience, 1000 ISO on the FS5 is similar to 640 ISO on cameras I have used in the past, including the FS700 and the GH line of Panasonic cameras. I have not used an f5 or f55. If you are using an actual light meter, I would test it with the camera and a gray card first.

Does the FS5 have false color/waveform or only zebras?

I tend to meter 2/3rds to 1 stop slower on the F5/55 to get the exposure where it looks like it should sit.

Can you dial specific amount of stops in with the internal vari-ND? I.e. Can I dial in an ND0.9 equivalent or do I need to spin the dial until it looks right?

Is there a significant decrease in DR shooting REC709 @ ISO1000 (metering at 640) vs Slog 3 @ 3200?

I guess overall I'm asking whether the FS5 behaves more like an F5 or an A7s. Or is it a wholly different beast in its own right?
