EVA1: Exposing RAW

Hallo all!

I'm outputting RAW onto an Atomos monitor recording in 4K CDNG. The Raw SDI out records a log profile, supposedly not 'full' V-log but a more basic version from the sensor. The dilemmas i'm in is what approach to go with exposure as I hear contradictory methods with Log & Raw. This will be my first time shooting on a Panasonic camera, and as an extension of that, using V-Log, plus only my 2nd time shooting Raw.

How does everyone approach exposing RAW on the EVA1? Moreover, what do people find when exposing V-log specifically?

I've shot in S-LOG2/3 quite a lot on the FS5 and found it to be great in the grade. I've read for shooting RAW to underexpose slightly, but for Log footage I ETTR amnd usually find good results, but what to do when the 2 are combined? Do I treat predominantly as Raw, as this is the recording format, or do I pay heed to the Log profile that the sensor gives out?

I'm going to do tests in the near future but wanted to see what findings you lot have made and what's the best MO for testing.

All the very best

So far I am seeing that you should shoot as if it wasn’t raw and expose at 0 to +1 stops just like internal recordings. The raw files have better color “out of the box” compared to the compressed clips.

I can't imagine who told you to underexpose RAW. That's a new one to me. My suggestion is to expose the image normally, even switcing on the V709 monitoring LUT in the LCD and/or HDMI output and simply expose as normal. This will give you a ton of info in post to work with throughout the range.

I am glad for this moment of sanity.

Sanity in a world of tinkering where apparently exposing anywhere but normally, preferably accompanied with other extreme camera settings, and post processed with the latest magic LUT with the words "Red", "Arri" or "Venice" in it reveals that special "Hollywood" setting that camera builders and color scientists must obviously have overlooked. :)

Seriously though, how sad that the question even must be asked.
