F3: Exposing by the numbers

I've been reading up on Dennis Hinsberg's and Pete (Osslund?)'s blogs about using the F3.

In Pete's blog comparing the FS7 to the F3, he writes this:

"I miss the exposure meter on the F3. You might have both a waveform monitor and histogram on the FS7 but I find it easier to use the number value on the F3 to set exposure. But so far I’ve discovered that S-log3 is easier to expose because it’s more forgiving."

What number value could he be referring to? The "Brightness Indicator" on the LCD? How would you use that percentage value to set exposure? By aiming the center of the frame at skin tone? Does the Indicator percentage refer to IRE values? I couldn't find it in the manual.

BTW you can buy a new F3 with RGB 444 from BH for only $4995 now. Don't all hit the phones ordering one now. Yeah, that's still pricey for an HD camera. But I like the F3 over the FS7 for these two reasons 1) You can do back focus adjustments. 2) The FZ mount has a breech lock. Being a former 1st AC focus puller, I don't trust the E mount. I wish I could afford an F5/F55 which also has these two features but I can't.

thank you

I believe he's referring to the spot meter function, which allows you to read the reflected value off an 18% grey card.

Yes I think you're right Bill. The "Brightness Indicator" is actually a spot meter and the percentage value must equate closely to IRE spot meter values. Nice feature of the F3.

Middle grey you want to target at 38% using the brightness meter with the F3 in Slog.

All Sony video cameras, including the a7 series, going forward should have had the brightness meter built in. Would make getting correct exposure so much easier and would have helped Sony sell the idea of using LOG gamma.
