Exporting: Sometimes gb, sometimes mb

Sometimes when i export using the first quicktime movie option it creates a decent looking file that is less than a gb. But now when i choose that option it creates a huge multi gb file. if i restart my computer it will go back to exporting small files for a while but will eventually start exporting larger files.
Im sure this sounds confusing but any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
im always leaving the "make movie self contained" unchecked. i exporting to the desktop earlier and the file was only 35mb. 10 min later i did the same without changing anything and it took much longer to export and the file was over a gb
