exporting raw .mov files to give to client

I just gave a client a hard drive containing all raw footage from a shoot. Footage was shot with an HVX200a at 720p. I did a log and transfer to export the files as .mov files. Files play fine for me, but the client can only hear the audio on her machine. It seems I broke the oldest rule in the book, and made assumptions that if the files played on my machine they would play on hers. And like Sam Jackson says, "When you make assumptions, you make an ass out of you and umptions".

So, is this problem because she doesn't have some of the codecs that I have in fcp? Is there anything she can install to be able to play the files as they are in quicktime? Or do I need to render out the files in another format?

Thanks in advance for any help. Suffice it to say, it's been one of those weeks. :(

You've probably tried this but... check her version number of QuickTime and see how that compares with yours. It might be as easy as an update.

Just out of curiosity, when you exported the files to .mov what type of compression did you use?

Did a little leg work and I think your initial assumption is right. Apple has a list of video codecs in quicktime and a lot of pro formats are missing. DVDPRO HD, XDCAM HD, etc. You got them with final cut, she more than likely doesn't have them with a standard quicktime install.

Here is the list I found, (In the right side bar under video codecs) http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/specs.html

This list might not be complete / accurate. It's just what I could find.

You could send her a copy of the codec...

(located at either:
HarDrive/Library/QuickTime
HarDrive/System/Library/QuickTime
User/Library/QuickTime)

... and have her install it, but I don't know if that is legal or if it will work without QuickTime Pro etc. Probably a bad idea now that I think about it.

Thanks Jedd. Any suggestions on the best file format to give her? I'm guessing I can just get the drive back and use compressor to export the files into another format?
