Exporting quality problems

So I have a 5 minute clip of a live band recording. It's 720x480, no letterboxing or nothing. Here are my export setting in the Adobe media encoder:

This is the crap I'm getting from it:

Any ideas?

have you experimented with other formats, DV or AVI out ?

if so, does the quality get better or worse ? is it just the quicktime with the H264 codec.

The problem is that Quicktime codec. Premiere sucks at encoding Quicktime. And that bitrate seems a bit low too. You need to export out as Microsoft avi with Compressor set to None, then run it through Quick Time Pro (it's only $30 and it does a great job with h.264) with a bitrate of at least 1500-2000 kbps.

I put the bitrate up to 1500 and it looked a lot better. Until I uploaded it to YouTube. YouTube blows. Thanks for all of your help guys, much appreciated.

If its only for YouTube - dimension down from 720 x 480 and up the bitrate some more.

Also : I agree with the poster that said export an avi first then encode /transcode with QT Pro

When I try to convert an avi to mov using Quicktime pro, there are tiny vertical black bars on the sides of the frame and the picture is squeezed horizontally (people and objects look thinner).

Anyone know how to fix this?

QT pro doesn't recognize Pixel Aspect Ratio, so the display resolution must change. For 16:9 (1.78:1) footage it's no longer 720 x 480, but 720 x 405.

The original footage is 4:3 letterboxed. Shouldn't the export resolution be 720x480 in this case?

In that case, it should be 720 x 541 for a 4:3 (1.33) ratio.

Remember that the resolution of 720 x 480 is only valid with the proper PAR. For 4:3 footage it's .9 and for 16:9 it's 1.2.

PAR isn't related to the actual aspect ratio of the footage, it is related to aspect ratio of the individual pixels that make up the footage. For Quicktime Pro, the program assumes that PAR of all footage that it reads is 1 (square pixel) and so you must readjust accordingly.
