Exporting Problems with Cross fade and HD quality

Hey guys, I just got a 7D a week ago. I went downtown to shoot some stuff and try to learn how to use the camera. When I edited it in final cut the fades are smooth and the pan shots I got are smooth as well. When I exported to quicktime in 720x1280 25p and 60p the cross fades have this flashing effect I don't want if the fade is long or short and the pan shots seem very jerky..Any help would be great.

~Thanks.

Did you transcode the 7D footage to pro res?

Also, 25p and 60p are inconsistent exports?

What was the original sequence setting and what transcode settings to pro res did you use?

Did you use the Canon EOS plug in.

Which Mac and what version of FCP?

Hey David,
Thanks for replying. No I didn't transcode the footage to pro res. I assumed it already was when I imported it as the quicktime files my mac mini saves the files as. I exported as 25p and 60p because those were the 2 I used with this edit. The original settings was DV NTSC 48KHZ, transcode to pro res was Apple pro res HQ 720x1280 25p 48KHZ. I have final cut 6. I'm not sure what you mean by if I used to the EOS plug in? This is my first DSLR so I'm learning as I go. Any help is much appreciated.

The Canon 7D shoot h.264 not pro res.

If you didn't transcode those raw files to pro res in order edit, then therein is a likely cause of your problem.

H.264 is not an editing codec, but a heavily compressed acquisition codec.

You might consider buying Philip Bloom's DVD on editing Canon 7D footage in FCP, because your workflow seems incorrect.

For example:

The other question I have is what were your 7D settings?

You can't shoot 60p in the camera, edit in 60p, and export 25p and expect the footage to look fluid. 25p is PAL frame rate.

Thanks, is there a way to transcode the raw files to pro res in FCP? I won't be able to spend $100 on a DVD for a couple weeks..It is something I have already been looking into..I am a big fan of bloom's work.

Mpeg Streamclip has already been mentioned.

But if you have Final Cut Pro, then you also have Compressor. You can use that as well.

I think there's a free download plugin in Canon's site for direct conversion to prores in the Log and Transfer window of Final Cut Pro. In fact, that's how I import my 5D and 7D footage to FCP. Make sure, however, that you set the default import conversion to Prores 4:2:2 and not 4:4:4, or you'll struggle a lot.
