Exporting from FCP 4

Does anyone have any experience exporting Quicktimes and posting them on the internet for quality viewing by both Apple and PC formats? All of my PC viewers complain that the image is dark and slow. Thanks.

Re: Exporting from FCP 4

The problem is that a Mac's monitor target gamma is 1.8 and most PCs have a target gamma of 2.2

In Mac OS X, you should go into system preferences, click displays, then color, then calibrate, and use the display calibrator to make a custom calibration to emulate a PC user's monitor level.    When you get to the part with the photo of the mountains and it asks you to set a target gamme, set it to 2.2.
Now just name it "PC Monitor" and select the setting for your display profile.

You'll notice that the blacks are significantly darker.   Now test your quicktime movies and see how dark they are.
Since you have Compressor with FCP4, you can use it to make a cross-platform Quicktime setting and adjust the brightness and contrast to restore the blacks to the way you would like to present them on a PC monitor.   If you need help with compressor's settings, let me know and I can walk you through it.

Thanks Tim. I am going to do what you suggested and may take you up on going through the settings later. Thanks again!

Re: Exporting from FCP 4

I am doing the same thing but am lost with compressor. How do I use it to get the best results for quicktime video streaming, for viewing on the web. And does it make sense to export it as flash as most browsers support it without having to download Quicktime or Media Player.
