Exporting an Image

In a recent thread, I posted a question about how to export my movie to quicktime and fix the aspect ratio.  The answer was to export to quicktime and specify the pixel size of the quicktime file.

Now I want to export an image from my movie for use on the web.  I found out that I need to do a quicktime export and select still frame and select jpg as the file type.  While this does export the frame it doesn't give me an opportunity to specify the image size (width and height) and my image looks squashed from top to bottom.

Does anyone have a workaround for this?  I can't believe it is this hard to export a still frame.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Exporting an Image

Just resize the exported image to 720x534 in your favorite image-editing program...

Re: Exporting an Image

How about posting the still so we can see what you mean by "squashed"

Re: Exporting an Image

There is at least two ways to do it:
1. Export it as JPG file via quicktime and then open it example in Photoshop. The size will be example in PAL Format 720x576, resolution 72 (1.19 mb). For the web reason you should make it little bit smaller - depending what you want to do. So resize it in Photoshop.
2.Or take a just screenshot from the viewer and do the adjustments in Photoshop.

Re: Exporting an Image

Guys there is a really easy way to do this...

To grab clips from FCP 4 or HD...

-Use your timeline marker to find the frame you want to export.  Pause the marker.

-Click File>Export>Quicktime Conversion

-A "Save" dialog box will appear

-There are two selection menus near the bottom of the "Save" box.
     -Format
     -Use

-Click the format menu and select "Still Image" and click "options" to the right of the menu.

-In this menu you have a list of formats to choose from. Select your format. Keep your frames per second text space blank.

-Press OK

-Save the picture to your drive.

-Upload to DVXuser.com

Hope those directions helped.

Re: Exporting an Image

Kyle, it looks like he already has done what you described (how to export a still image). Looks like CMessineo is more asking how to adjust the image's dimensions so it doesn't look "squashed" to him.

CMessineo, now that you've gotten a still of your vid, if you posted it, it might help us understand what you mean by "squashed" and find a fix for you :)

Here is a sample below. The height does not look correct.

Re: Exporting an Image

It does not look incredibly distorted to me. In fact, it looks fine (tho I'm sure you're seeing a more pronounced variance as you're looking at it's appearance in FCP as well).

Are you shooting letterbox or squeeze?

Re: Exporting an Image

It is definitely squashed. When I compare it to the FCP screen I can easily see the difference.

I am shooting it in letterbox (which just puts the black line at the top and the bottom).

I know that the problem is with square versus rectangular pixels. When I export my movie if I specify the width and height I can make it look perfect. However, when I export the frame, there is no option to specify the width and height.

People keep telling me to resize it in photoshop. Only I don't own photoshop and that seems like more effort than you should have to go through with a high-end program like FCP.

Oh well, it looks like I am running out of options.
