Exporting a Master Copy

I need some help exporting a master copy for a client. I use FCP and have always just exported by clicking file>export>quicktime movie - then exporting my video with default settings (prores 422).

My client wants a master copy as a h.264/MPEG-4. Can I do this in FCP? How would I do this? Sorry i dont know much about codecs and containers.

That's not what I would call a "master".

You need to get full specs from your client. You should be able to use Compressor to make a h.264 to those specs.

hmm

hmm

my client doesnt know what they want (they dont do video). They just want a full quality version of the video to have. They asked for it to be h.264/mpeg-4, i dont know how to export to this or convert my already exported file to this. Can anyone tell me how?

You can compress to h.264 through either the "Quicktime Conversion" or "Compressor" options. I'd go with compressor. When the compressor window opens up, just drag over one of the h264 presets. You can double click on it to bring up the options. From the sound of it you'll want to set the quality to high.

Before you do this you should probably find out exactly what your client wants. H.264 is not a good mastering format.

Open Compressor, and drop the self contained current settings movie into it. Then apply the h.264 preset to the movie and encode. The h.264 AppleTV preset will encode 1280x720.

Again, this is a heavily compressed computational intensive file and then would have to be converted to an editing codec if your client needs it edit again.

I would give the client exactly what they want as well as the prores master, advise them that prores is a better file
that way they will hopefully sing your praises to other clients

to get an h264, dump your prores on mpeg streamclip (free software converter, find it with google)
