ok, Im about to blow a hole in my head. I was up all night last night editing then trying to export my movie via avid express pro. i would except quicktime, avi, anything that looked halfway decent, but no, i try to export and it gives me an error saying cannot export bin. i tried setting the mark in and out on the clip and that didnt even work. IDK, anymore. does anyone have some comfort for this tired soul, i need help.

thanks all

i'm certainly no avid expert, and there are guys in this forum who know a heck of a lot about avid...but i wonder if you've tried making a copy/duplicate of your sequence, then ensuring all effects are rendered, then try exporting again from the duplicated sequence. I don't want you wasting any more time, but if you felt like trying that it might work. Otherwise, wait until gurus like Krestofre answer your question.

Only modorators can bestow the title of guru. :)

The Dark, Sean has a good suggestion. I'll add to it with a question: When you select export from the menu, what do you have highlighted in Avid? Avid will try to export whatever you have active. It sounds like you may have a bin selected, in which case Avid can't export a bin in that way. Try clicking on your sequence in the timeline, or inside the bin and then choosing export.

Also, here's a little trick with Avid: To get the best quality, export the sequence as a Quicktime Reference file, then load that film into an external encoder to get your stand-alone quicktime, AVI, or whatever.

Let us know if you're still having trouble.

There are lots of things that can mess up your export.

One thing which cause me A LOT of trouble was having a recent enough version. My Quicktime was relativly new but I was still running Xpress Pro 4.6 (I had upgraded to 5.0 briefly but then went back since it was so damn buggy). Literally, only one time out a hundred was I able to export anything. Finally, I told someone about this and they said it was likely because my quicktime was newer than my Avid. I went ahead and got Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.23 and the problem has never occured again.

Ah yes, DavidBeier, I'm glad you brought it up. The incompatible Quicktime version is a very possible culprit in this problem! I wrestled with it for a week before I downloaded an old version of Quicktime and found that it solved my export problems.

ok im still having problems. but i thank u all for helping me, that means alot. anyway, i made sure i hade only the sequence activated, not the the bin, and im exporting avi, well the process of esporting will go to like 85% then it will say that the avi export limit has been hit and it cant export the file, as if the avi were too large or something. Now i know that i have enough space on my comp. is it a setting or somthing?

Avid uses AVI type 1, which has a 2 gig limit. If you have to have AVI you'll need to do a conversion in another program.

It's the fact that Avid works with Avi 1 instead of Avi 2. You have a 2GB limit on Avi files in Avid. That's where the export a Quicktime Reference and load the Reference file into an outside encoder workflow comes in handy. :)

EDIT: Dang! Doc Holliday is even my avatar and I wasn't quick enough on the draw. :(

yeah i dont really have any external source of encoding that i know of. If i could get some suggestions on sources that would be cool though. BUt going along with the AVi format, i finally got the avi exported to a blank drive, and guess what happens, NO FREAKIN SOUND!!!, i checked the properties under of the file and it displayed all the sound properties that i had checked in avid before i exported, so how is this happining? any thoughts,

P.s - Avid is like my girlfriend, soo fine and yet, such a *****.

If this is the non-educational version of Avid, then it came with Sorenson Squeeze which is an excellent encoding app.

Otherwise, do a google search for programs to convert QT to AVI. There are a ton of free or open source options.

export pain

export pain

I feel you pain, I had lots of trouble figuring it out, for the price you pay for Avid Express Pro Hd, you'd think like with Adobe and other products, you'd have built in a DVD authoring program at least. Avid does give you the option of exporting straight into Sonic DVD etc. Which is nice if you have it!
I had a project that I tried to export like 10 times whilst learning this program, and like you, lovely quicktime avis with no sound, or error messages of not having the right codecs or not enough space etc etc.
In the end, I found the export option under Sorenson Squeeze was the only thing that works well so far, and I'll play around with some more later, maybe I'm just a massichist? Use sorensen and export as a Quicktime avi, not reference, I think you need the external encoder to use that, which we both obviously currently don't have. If you do it as quicktime reference, and play it, you get a lovely electronic piercing shrill sound that wants to blow your speakers and your ears, and you get no picture. Anyway, good luck, and yes, definitely make sure you got the right sequence selected!:badputer:
