F35: Exploring alien worlds.

Hey guys,

Well, after 3.5 months of non-stop shooting with just a single day off, I'm now blissfully unemployed again. So I've finally got a spare minute to share a few of the recent adventures I've taken the F35 along on :)

First up is a little sci-fi action thriller. This one was a toughie, we were in dense rainforest (standing in for a distant alien world, with the help of a little art department and colour grading magic) and the entire shoot was basically spent knee-deep in mud and constant pouring rain, and I discovered the night before, that I wouldn't have enough harddrive space to record in 12-bit DPX, which was the format we'd run extensive tests on to see how well the footage would handle the pretty intense grade. Fortunately the 12-bit 4:4:4 ProResXQ I had to record in held up better than I'd hoped. Here are some preliminary grades:

Holy CRAP man! You are seriously raising the bar. #4 is so daring, no other digital camera could handle that. I need to see this in moving images.

I am ashamed at how much time my F35 has been spending on the shelf, clearly yours has been put to good use. I hope you continue to share more from these projects. I am absolutely blown away by these frame grabs.

Thank you for posting these. I've written a story set in the woods and these really inspire me that I did. I have 30 acres of woods on my property some super close to my studio or what my friends like to call it. Its a nice 2 story building that's 40 x 80 with a mezzanine (hope that's spelled right) in half of it.

By #4 do you mean the nighttime one with the luminescent plants? If by 'daring' you mean 'difficult' then I'd certainly agree with you - night exteriors, in knee-deep mud, with T/2.8 lenses and a 400 ISO sensor are a biatche! :p

That's one area where I'll certainly give the edge to newer sensor tech - trying to create a naturalish feeling night scene when you need that much light is seriously tough (if you don't have BIG lights to work with). We had two big concert UV LEDs hitting the fluorescent plants, but we really needed a couple more of them, they just don't have enough output for 400 ISO at T2.8.

I've had the F35 out in a bunch of different woodland and forrest environments so far, and it really does handle them nicely. Bright skies through the canopies just clip out so nicely and naturally that (for first time outside of the Alexa) I don't actually mind the clipping that much.
