Exploiting the situation.... setting up basic audio, for myself and rental.

What Richard said. I own something like 25 microphones and a couple of booms, but lavs are still my choice for close-up dialog when plain old intelligibility is more important than the slight chance somebody will be offended by the appearance of the mic.
