FS7: exploded view of Fs7 loupe

Sony doesn't make it easy and looks like they provided you with a wrong document. It does not look like FS7 loop at all.

Whoops! Good catch BoF.

The parts diagram above is for the Sony PMW 350 ( from when I was attempting to obtain a new diopter for the Sony 350 ) I'll leave it up for anyone who might need it. Sony doesn't make these diagrams readily available. I obtained them from a Sony rep who assisted me in sourcing replacement parts after I snapped my Fs7 loupe in half.

Here is the correct diagram:

The entire loupe assembly is $345.00. I was surprised at that relatively low price. Yes, it is just plastic but I figured Sony would charge much more than that for a replacement. At the time that I broke mine there were no aftermarket substitutes available.

It's funny how simplified if not primitive the FS7 finder's construction looks compared to the PMW350. :) !

any 52mm diopter will fit perfectly. A lot of us have replaced the OEM with + 3 and +4 diopters which make the VF a little larger.

Thanks for posting this. My camera fell once and the loupe took the blow. It was in many pieces and I got it back together, but now it can't be focused for my particular vision. I'll check into the price of the one broken part I need.

I keep a set of diopters in my camera bag just on the off chance that another Operator on a multi-cam shoot would need to use my camera and prefer another strength of diopter. Or for the rare occasions that I rent my rig out to someone.

A set of 52mm diopters is fairly cheap- $9 for the Vivitar set.

The concave plastic diopter piece can easily become dulled from cleaning / over cleaning. Use canned air when possible instead of a lens cloth / tissue. One of those mini-sized air cans fits easily in a camera bag side pocket. When you do use a lens cloth / tissue ( or bottom of your shirt ), avoid aggressive "swirling" motion only in the center area of the diopter. Use broad cleaning motion that isn't limited to a circular motion. The worn diopters usually end up with swirly scratches / dulling in the center area. I don't know why the camera manufacturers don't make these loupe lenses out of glass instead of plastic. Cost cutting? Seems such an integral part of a $8k camera should be of higher quality material. I don't recall of the loupe lens on the Amira is glass or plastic. But on most cameras, even on the higher priced F55, the piece is just plastic. To my knowledge, Sony doesn't sell the plastic lens only. ( the diagrams don't list the part as an individual part but rather as part of an assembly. When I spoke to a Sony rep he could only provide me with the parts diagram and didn't know if the little plastic lens was available as a stand-alone part. Sony Parts only fulfills parts orders. If you don't have a part number, they can't help you. They have no knowledge of the camera. ) The result is that you end up having to purchase that entire section of the loupe. And for the PMW 350 that means it cost $337.00 just to replace a scratched plastic diopter lens that if sold alone would probably be about $15.00. So treat your cheap plastic lens in the loupe like a $300+ part!

I am giving the Zacuto loupe a try as soon as I receive the Zacuto bracket for mounting to the Fs7 LCD. I'll let you all know how I like it compared to the standard loupe. I am looking forward to having a loupe that is shorter in length and more compact. I am using a NATO rail mount and am also about to perform the Giles Hibernating LCD™ upgrade. A downside to the NATO rail setup has always been the LCD stuck out sideways in a fixed position which makes it more prone to damage when in a carry bag and more difficult to fit into a carry bag.
