Explanation of Crispening please

I have noticed lately that some profiles are advocating turning up "Crispening" in the sharpness settings and I was simply wondering what this specific setting was controlling.

The crisping value sets the level where sharpening affects the image.

Rather than allowing the sharpening filter sharpen the whole image only the high frequency detail is touched. If you think about shooting someone's face you'd want the sharpening to be on the hair and eye lashes rather than skin.

The DETAIL value adds contrast to the crisper edges.

Really you want to keep sharpening down to a minimum as you'll get more from your 24Mbps. High contrast sharp edges eat your bit rate for breakfast.
