Experiment Vol. IV-VI

Kirk Gillock

Rebel with a cause
Been goofing around with the camera lately trying to come up with a new effect. Some of you saw the first attempt which left many of you dizzy and sick. These attempts are still rough but a little easier on the eyes (and stomach). Let me know what you think.

Experiment Vol. IV (5.75mb):

In case you missed it.

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

stuff lookin pretty cool man. the continuous paning shots are looking pretty seemless...well done!

it might be kinda cool to get a little artists turntable..the kind a sculptor would use..the ball bearings are really smooth on some of those, i bet you could mount the dvx to one and get smoe really smooth shots.

the pushin is well done as well...good stuff man!

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

nice dude. how long did it take to composite that first movie?

Also, what software and settings did you use to get the quicktime so small, but still maintain the quality? hehe

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

PK! I'm amazed by your experiments. How did you do your timming? I think you need to build yourself a motion control camera. Choice of music is also great. Though the last one did make me go cuco for cocopuffs, meaning I got dizzy. I think its time you stop experimenting and apply your skills on like a music video or somthing. Great job PK.

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

PK,

Just take this picture down to the shop that's making your dolly!

It would probably only cost you $20 over there. :P

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

Rich - Thanks. That's a great idea. I bet there's even a way to build one with a small motor that can sit on the tripod. The motor only has to be strong enough to turn the weight of the camera.

WaveRiderXIX - I appreciate it. It took about 20 minutes to shoot and about 2-3 hours to edit. There wasn't really any compositing, only straight cuts or dissolves. One shot has the model twice in the same frame, that was done with a simple wipe (you can see the column stretch a little - d'oh!). Rendering and uploading took longer than shooting and editting. I use Soreson Squeeze for compression. I use the "Large Quicktime" setting and then change the audio to 64kb/sec and use "1-pass Quality VBR" for method. I'm still trying to find the best quality/file size.

Bluespider - Thanks a lot! I just spun the camera around a few times for each position. Then in post I found the shots that seemed to transition the best (speed, light, etc.).

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

ExFilms - ;D That's great! I'll have them build me a fembot while their at it. How have you been? Haven't heard from you in a while? What's the ETA on your DVX100?

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

No definite eta on the camera...turns out the cops want like $1500 to turn my drivers license back on (or un-suspend it, or whatever its called). It's ok though, over the last 14 years I've saved over $20,000 by not having insurance. The fines are a small price to pay considering the savings. :)

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

very awesome pk!

for experiment V - how did you do that? and what did you use to move down the hallway? a dolly? a steadycam?

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

Funky stuff PK. Can't wait to see some of these experiments in your upcoming shorts.

Are you still on dial-up? How long does it take to upload?

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

LuzCruz - Thanks man. That was a homemade dolly. Just went down the hallway twice and then merged the two versions in After Effects with a mask. It was poorly done. A dolly on tracks would have worked much better.

greeches - Glad you liked it. I never tried rotoscoping before. It's actually fairly easy in After Effects. Just create two layers and designate the top one as the one you'll be screwing with. Double click it and it opens up the layer so you can erase, clone, or do whatever you want to it (just like Photoshop). You can tell it to change a single frame at a time or every frame. Try it!

Dakota - Thanks. Still on dial-up. It sometimes takes longer to upload than to make the movies.

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

PK, this is really nice and some really interesting effects.

I love the music...from Amelie, right?

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

I appreciate it LloydC.

Disjecta - You got it! Amelie has one of the best soundtracks ever. And, visually, it's one of the best movies. If I ever have a daughter I might just name her Amelie. Now if I can just find a woman to marry who would allow me to do that. ;D

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

;D Actually it's 3 different chicks. The Loner had one of my older students, Experiment 1-3 was another student (we do a radio and tv show together), and Experiment 4 had one of my employees. I use them as actors because they seem to be the only people who can understand my thai.

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

PK - the only thing that might add to this exercise would be a costume change between each edit?

Re: Experiment Vol. IV-VI

overland - Actually, I've already shot and completed something that does the exact thing you suggested. It's even been uploaded and ready to be watched. If I can't finish my short film before the Jan. 31st deadline I will submit the already completed project instead. Thanks.
