Experiment Vol I-III

Kirk Gillock

Rebel with a cause
This afternoon decided to try something different. Unfortunately I'm an idiot and forgot to set the shutter speed higher. This lapse of judgement made the footage almost useless. But I pieced it together anyway. WARNING: Hope you don't get dizzy.

Experimental Vol. I-III (7.5mb):
http://www.laundryday.com/dvx/videos/experiment1-3.mov

Info:
- If you see jumps, it is not the edits, but rather the clumsy cameraman failing to pan smoothly (or shutter speed).
- No still images were used.
- Vol. I & III were done in Premiere Pro.  Vol. II was done with masks in After Effects.
- The music is from the French film Amelie.

Re: Experimental Video

I really like it! Maybe i'm a nuts but I don't understant how you did the vol 1 and 3 :-/ can you tell me your secret? :P

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

What? No female voiceover about being a loner? ;D

So far it's a successful first experiment. I thought your pans were too fast in Experiment 1, but I liked the effect overall.

In Experiment 2 the girl is walking in the opposited direction of the pan (also happens at least twice in Exp 3), I thought it might've worked a little better if she were walking with the pan and then she's left behind.

This reminded me of a Kylie Minogue video (Just the pan concept and the doubling of the girl) where Kylie is multiplied about fifty times during the course of a song as the camera does a continuous pan.

I like your color timing. It's very warm and subdued. The music was awesome. You gots talent.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

that was really cool PK
I really liked Vol I and III... now how did you do it? :o

Re: Experimental Video

Isaac - The Kylie minogue video is "Come Into My World." It's amazing. (Everyone should check it out.) I agree the camera pan is WAY too fast. Going slow was too difficult too control. I'm going to try this experiment again tomorrow and I'll have the subject walk with the camera pan. We'll see how it goes.

Ronik and Lloyd - Thanks! ...It's 4am here so I hope I don't sound like an idiot.  Basically I know nothing about special fx so everything you see was done with straight cuts in Premiere. I recorded two rotations of the camera for each position of the subject. I then went through the footage and found the smoothest spins and editted them all together to form an "almost" seamless 360 degree spin. Walla!  Now go try it!

Does yours playback strange in Quicktime? Mine has annoying horizontal lines popping up everywhere. But it plays back ok on the external monitor. Weird.

Re: Experimental Video

Auto-expose?! WHY! Let those windows blow out, son!  >:(

Anyways... did you just set up the tripod, then pan around the room with her in one spot, then do it again with her in another, and so on and so forth and then edit it together like that? Pretty seamless edits

EDIT:
Damnit PK beat me to it

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

thats really cool! i really liked the colors too. made it look kind of old fashioned. also, thanks for spilling your secret, now i'm gonna have to do that sometime, lol.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

It's sure I'm gonna try it! I just won't be able to capture it because I have to order a deck and I don't want to use my dvx to capture. I'll order my deck on Monday or Tuesday. P.K., you've a lot of imagination !

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

P.K.....this makes me dizzy....can't stop the room from spinning.....drank too much Fat Weasel last night...maybe it's just me....? Vol. II very cool.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

Despite the smooth fluid head pans ;) it's a nice little experiment. My head hurts now. :(

;D

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

yo yo! that was about as artistic and innovative thing I've seen in a long long time! I can tell you got a real creative vision for these type of things, very inspiring bro, i dont really care about the technical flaws...it was new and neat and you should get a gold star

EDIT
Dammit bspidy, every time I see that eye, I think its thartley...

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

That avatar is confusing the hell out of me as well. Especially when you both are in the same conversation.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

nice dude.

How did you get the pictures seamless?

I thought they were still images stitched together in one big pan.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

Oh my God.
I am sooooo dizzy after that. But seriously, it was very well done. Maybe a little fast. After the 5th spin, I was feeling a little woozy.
I'm interested in seeing what you might use this effect for.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

WaveRider - That probably would have been eaiser  ;D  Just panned the camera around in circles, always making sure I was out-of-frame, and tried to keep the speed the same (but failed horribly). I'm going to try it again but with slower pans. Wish I had a way to keep the pan speed constant. Any ideas?

aedude - Definitely makes people dizzy. Don't operate heavy machinery after viewing this video. The effect could be used for a music video or I plan on using a similar effect for a scene in a movie that shows the progression of time. Do you think that would work (if the pan was slower, of course)?

Glad you all liked it. As Isaac mentioned eariler, Kylie Minogue's video (Come Into My World) has a MUCH more elaborate version (they move around an entire city block 5-6 times, each time duplicating Kylie and the extras). I thought you could do the same by just spinning the camera on the tripod at a relatively constant rate. If you wanted to take it into After Effects you could do MUCH more with it. Adding a 3d layer or compositing random things. I think I might add myself into one on the pans (in the background).

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

P.K., Really like your experiments! You're on to something special, nice work and very imaginative. Need more..
But maybe you could pan the other way on the last shot to get us all 'unwound' ?? ;D

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

rant time.

damn you PK! you have been lying to us this whole time..."i'm just a lonely english teacher living in thailand. i dont know anybody and i am just a humble amateur!"

two words...

WHAT EVER!!!

DUDE! you have managed to blow my mind three times this week with your "experiments".

and how does such a "loner" manage to always land a hottie as the female lead?

watch out for PK everybody. this boy's got mad skills.

the only thing i feel good about right now is you botched the shutter speed and got jumpy footage! ;D

P.K. Gillock...you're my hero.

seriously, this is very cool. i am going to sell my dvx now. i'm not worthy.

Re: Experimental Video

Re: Experimental Video

btw - the kylie minogue video is directed by michel gondry. he directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. you can see all of his music videos on dvd.

i own these, and i go back several times for inspirato...also in this collection are the works of chris cunnigham and spike jonze. some great tricked out stuff. gondry has one of the most warped visions of any human being i know of.
