Hi All,
I'm very pleased with my AF100. We are now using it for 90% of our shoots. The other 10% we are still using two HVX200's for when proper matched multicam is the only sensible way to go.
With our hectic shooting schedule and small crews, the one issue I have shooting the AF100 is that it's hard for us to remember to get enough cutaways and closeups. I'm pleased with how well we're doing shooting in a more cinematic style rather than the "master wide cam plus closeup cam" we used to use when shooting with two Canon dSLRs. But it seems to be asking a bit much of director, actor and crew to remember to take extra cutaways ALL THE TIME, when we're already trying to be super-efficient by editing in-cam rather than shooting lots of takes from lots of angles.
My proposed solution is to have one person on cutaway duty, manning a single camera on a tripod whose only responsibility is to grab those closeups and cutaways, either as we are rolling for the main cam takes or reminding us and immediately forcing us to shoot a cutaway every time we cut the main action.
I've got a few cameras available to do that with - a GF1 (limited manual control, only 720p, but takes the same lenses as the AF100 so great for packing), a 7D, a 5DMkII, and our HVX200's. I can't afford to buy any more kit right now so I want to make the best of what I have!
I know there have been threads about B-cams before, and of course I'll do experiments myself.
But has anyone had much experience of matching any of these cameras to the AF100? How did you do, and what pitfalls did you encounter? How well does stuff intercut, given that we'll be using it for cutaways, inserts and closeups rather than multi-cam style swapping between cams?
Cheers, Hywel.
