Experience with Nikon 1 V1 Video Settings

Dear All:

I have been looking for a compact system with good reach and image quality. The search lead me to the Nikon 1 V1 and the Nikkor AF-S 70-300 VR (mounted via FT-1 adapter).

I have done a couple of test videos and found that shooting very flat in bright light (sunny day by the lake) works okay (picture control neutral, saturation -2, contrast -3, sharpening 0, brightness -1). See below, "movie 14."

But, I’m curious if anyone has more experience with the Nikon V1 and settings that work well for video.

Thanks,
Andrew

Ended up intercutting footage from the Sony NEX-5N + 35mm f/1.8 and making a short film as opposed to purely a camera test. The footage from the Nikon is much softer (partly because it was not shoot at f/8 - f/11 where the lens is sharpest at the tele end). The Nikon also has less dynamic range than the Sony. Turning down contrast helps but can result in noticeable banding if the image is post processed. All in all, for a tiny system with 800mm of reach not too bad.

Looking around for a stabilized and compact set up with lots of reach, my other thought is the Sony a6000 + FE 70-200mm F4G OSS. Having 6000 pixels to work with and cropping down to an HD frame of 1920 should provide about 3x "digital" zoom without compromising image quality. Maybe? It would be interesting to compare.

A6000 is the best compact camera for video. Lovely image. Sharp 1080p, no aliasing/moire, peaking/zebras, evf,

Regarding the 6000 pixels note, the a6000 only shoots video at 1080p. In stills mode it's 24mp so for timelapse and stills you can do a signifcant crop to 1080p, not in video.

Yeah, I'm with you. The a6000 seems like a good choice, whether they upgrade the codec to XAVC S or not : )

Regarding the 6000 pixels note, the a6000 only shoots video at 1080p.

I thought you could use Sony's "clear image zoom" (basically a sensor crop). They advertise CIZ as 2x, while digital zoom is advertised as 4x. But, the camera has enough pixels so that a 3.1x zoom would map each pixel from the sensor one-to-one to each pixel in the 1920x1080 video frame.

Best,
Andrew

I haven't heard the A6000 has a 1:1 pixel crop mode. Not reported by any reviews. So can't confirm whether it's true or a simple digital crop mode.

But it might be there. Someome just discovered the A7s having a lossless 4x crop mode and all reviews though it only had a s35 crop, would be truly great if the little A6000 inherets this feature.
