Execution (Gore) (Critique Needed)

hmm, I have to watch it without the sound. The chunks flying IS truly gory. You achieved disgusting. But Im not so sure that the speed of the chunks sits well with me. It might be the intact shirt that's playing with my eye.

Does this movie tie in with video games? If so, you nailed it. Its basically hitman or resident evil style gore.

Don't know how to practically add marks to the shirt after the hit. So I would have to add them in post, wich i hadn't time for this time.

In future movies i will definatley give everything more time and money to achieve the true realistic look.

Why no sound? From what i've heard sound is 70 % to the movie realism. Don't know if it's true, but i do know that it adds more realism with sound. Is it YouTube that is the problem? Know a lot of people who've had trouble with no sound on YouTube. Know how to fix it!

I think your work looks really good. I do have a few things I noticed

1) if someone was shot in the back three times, it seems like there reaction time would have been faster. i think it would have looked more realistic if the actor threw his hands down after the first shot

2) i think the speed was too slow. this ties in with #1

I think your blood and guts look awesome. Did you use some squibs or was all of it cg?

I'm NO special effects guy - but a guy I know did a similar effect by adding marks to a shirt - shooting the whole shot with the marks on the shirt - then REMOVING them in post prior to the gun shot.

It seems easier to cover up marks than to try to add them in post, especially if you're talking about a static shot with a solid colored shirt.

Thanks for that tip! Will totally try it! :)

And, the blood was not added in post. I had my brother throw three blood-filled eggs as hard as he could. I filled the eggs with Red (Mixed Poster Colour) and a few drops Black (Mixed Poster Colour) and some Syrup (Unsure of spelling that last word).

I did also notice how slow i was reacting. Will try to be more realistic when acting next time i try this kind of effects.

Hey, adding to the holes in post is a great idea, wookie!

The sound definitely sells it. That's why I had to turn it down. You were asking about the visual aspects and I was totally sucked in by the sound. These are better gunshots than Ive ever seen on student shorts, etc.

If you do the reverse hole technique I think you will fool just about everybody.

Thanks! :)

The gunshot sound effects was from "Sony Sound Effects" - Vol. 7 - Weapons & Firearms.

If you want, please vote what you think it's worth on youtube! :D

Also (unrelated to the vfx/sfx) right at the beginning of the shot you sort of pan up to the guy shooting. But its a bad crossfade edit from 2 shots with different white balance. The guys jacket goes from dark to bright in a jarring way. Turn automatic white balancing off and balance once per shot.

Cool.
The last thing I ever thought I'd be giving advice on is special effects.
I've literally never done any sort of effect in anything I've done personally - but alot of people I work with are deep into that stuff - I guess I picked up some stuff without realizing it.

Wow! :) Thanks for sharing that . Didn't know i could change whitebalance manually :) Very helpful to know when i will make a movie in the end of this summer.
