Re: Excuse My Ignorance

Do yourself a *huge* favor and consider getting something like the Gary Kleiner or Douglas Spotted Eagle training DVD's. Vegas works differently than other editors, and a little guidance will go a long way towards getting you up to speed.

There's a "play" button above the media pool that lets you preview clips. And the preview window can be stretched out to where it's full size (if your screen resolution is high enough) or it can be undocked to become a full-res floating window.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

The preview won't go full screen, but you can undock it (by "grabbing" the horizontal line to the left of the preview window), then resize the little window. Depending on your screen resolution, you can make it considerably bigger.

You view a clip in the Media Pool by clicking on it, then clicking the little "play" arrow at the top of the Media Pool window.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

got the horizontal thing, thanks. not full frame but does the trick :D. and yes, i may need to get the DVD to give me a running start :P. um... i must have done something wrong. when i preview the clip from the media pool, i get only sound, no movement???

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

You might have a file format that Vegas doesn't recognize -- what's the clip? Is it by chance a video recorded on a digital (still) camera?

You probably want to preview out to a TV or monitor anway.

I have a set of Kleiner DVDs I'd be willing to sell.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

i have a 17" dell hdtv as my monitor, i filmed it on my dvx100a.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

You mean as your monitor separate from your computer? Like a TV? You'll want to preview out.

Check the file format of the clip.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

the tv IS my computer monitor. thats how dell is offering some of it now ??? i just thought it'd be cool to use later on as a tv in my bathroom lol. file format is .avi

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

That's what I'm asking.  You'll want to have a separate TV -- not your computer monitor -- that you preview out to.  THERE the preview will be fullscreen.

You should have no problem playing the clip in the Media Pool.  Are you having any problems with other clips?  If not, I'd suggest recapturing the clip.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

okay. read back dude. i got the whole *video preview* thing down. im fine with not being able to get *full screen* on my computer monitor. when i adjusted, it was fine. Now back to the *media pool*. when i play the *clip* i get sound no "movement"???

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

I don't think you understand what David is trying to explain.  It is very important to preview your work on a regular television (tho it would be better to use a properly calibrated broadcast monitor) as that is what your work will most likely end up being viewed on.  Images look different (colors, quality, motion, etc.) on your computer monitor than they do on a normal television screen, and thus it is hard to get an accurate idea of what your work looks like without previewing on a properly calibrated external monitor.

As far as being able to see the full frame in the video preview window, make sure that you change the preview size in the preview quality drop-down menu (directly above the preview window) to "Auto" (as opposed to "Full").  That way, you'll see the full frame no matter what size you resize the preview window to.

As for your clip problem, when you say you get no "movement", do you mean that you see a single frame of the video or that the preview window is simply black?  Also, did you use Vegas' capture program to capture the footage or another capture program?  Is this just with one clip or many clips captured from the same tape/camera?  Try to provide as much information concerning your capture/acquisition process up to arriving at this point.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

Yeah, chill. I'm trying to help.

You'll notice over the preview screen, there's a little button shaped like a TV. If you click that, you send the preview out over firewire, back through your camera or deck, and into an NTSC monitor or TV. This will be a full-screen preview and accurate as to what your output will look like on a TV. If you compare it to your computer screen, you'll see that the colors, resolutiobn, motion cadence, etc., are different. This is an imporant difference when editing, color-correcting, choosing titles.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

okay. what i meant is, i want to fill my "entire" screen with the entire movie as it plays in my video preview. no timeline audio line etc. i do have the setting *Best (Auto)* btw. sometimes i can double click what im viewing and it sizes up. atleast, thats what *iMovie* did. but i caught what he was saying, just raise the horizontal bar.

on the other note. i captured directly to vegas5 in this rudament.

-NTSC DV 24p Widescreen (720x480, 23.976 fps)
-Width: 720
-Height: 480
-Film Rate: 23.976 (IVTC FILM)
-Field Order: None (progressive scan)
-Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)
-Full resolution redering quality: Good
-Motion blur type: Gaussian
-Deinterlace method: None

These are my exact capturing stats. Would you recommend different settings for 24p?

i have many clips (49) or so. when i *click a clip*, *press play* i get *audio* of the entire clip. BUT, in the clip i see the *starting point* of the clip (the first frame). it wont play with the audio at all, it holds the "first captured frame". im sorry for bringing up something so remedial gentleman, and i thank you all for you help and time, very generous :D

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

sorry david, i must've been typing same time as you :P

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

btw- it wasn't widescreen like i stated, it was regular- i didn't squeeze mode.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

I don't know. I haven't seen that happen. Holds the first frame?

Let me play with it and see if I can replicate the problem.

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

Im only trying to help

Have you actually captured the footage and dropped into the track?

Or are you merely PREVIEWING from the Media Pool or Explorer Window?

or

You mention you have 69 different clips? Have you dragged an event past the end of the media file and do you have 'Enable looping on events by default' selected?

Have you by any chance inserted a Velocity Envelope?

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

ok.. so you are PRE-viewing clips in the media pool, they dont play picture? or are you talking about previewing Video that you have dropped/dragged onto the timeline from the mediapool, then playing that back and it shows no picture?

It sounds like you stated selecting a media file in the media pool then press play you get only audio means you are previewing in the media pool, but If that is not what you mean:

If you mean clips from the mediapool dragged onto the timeline then previewed:

There are a few things that can be the problem, First would be a codec issue, but I am assuming you didnt mess with the codec settings in vegas so next obvious  problem could be the video track is muted, meaning the little red no smoking sign thing is highlighted in the info box to the leftmost of the video track, or Audio is selected to Solo, which is the exlamation mark.

Also, in your preview window there is a little button that looks like a circle inside a 2-tone square. If that is pressed, and set to clipboard or select all, you will get sound only and no picture.

If you did mean that you are actually playing clips in the media pool that the freeze frame shows.. what does the framerate show when you are playing back?

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

i open my "media pool", where all my clips are captured. i check my properties. cool! everything looks like it captured fine. when i drag and drop to the "timeline" and "video preview"what i just dropped, everything is *peachy* ;D BUT, i thought to myself "...i want to preview this clip in the "media pool" first instead of drag and drop **** i don't want in the timeline, gee it shure would save me some time". Soooo, i dart back to the media pool where all my clips are, click one of the clips, press play (well, it's actually on *auto*) anyways, where the clip starts it holds that frame, late's say *candles*. well it holds on the "candles" as the audio plays on :o should i just reinstall the program?

Re: Excuse My Ignorance

check the button in the preview window as Jarred stated or you may have have the view on external moniter box checked(I think it will play the timeline in the preview window but not the media pool)
I do the same thing, I go through the media pool and preview clips before I drop them into the timeline and mine works fine either in the preview window or the external moniter(I recommend using a external tv or something it really helps.) Please post back if any of these ideas work so we know.

You can also set the media pool to auto play. There is a button about 2 to the right(sorry I don't have vegas here). It has a play arrow and something else with it. If you check this and single click a clip it should start to preview in about 1-2 seconds. This feature does work with audio and video.
