EX3 Workflow on PC

What is the way to edit EX3 footage on a PC? I'm building a new PC with an i7 920 processor. The edit software I have now is Adobe CS4.

I'm assuming you will have a fast computer. YMMV.

Download and install the software off the Sony site.
https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/sony-software-model-XDZP1.aspx

Requirements:
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-...-downloads-XDCAMEXClipBrowserWindowsMac.shtml

Plug in your camera to your computer with a USB cable. Copy the entire directory from the camera to your hard drive, OR from your card reader.

Open the Sony software and convert the video files to MXF. (Its fast off your hard drive.)

Set a new project for XDCAM files of the appropriate fps and resolution, depending on what you shot.

In your Premiere project FILE->IMPORT the MXF files. If everthing is good delete the orginal files off your camera, or card reader, or archive them.

Allow awhile for peak files to be generated. Then edit normally.

I have CS3 and even though it shows XDCAM presets it doesn't handle the proprietary MP4 files from the camera. Does CS4 handle the Sony MP4s?

I apologize for not checking his software if that has changed.

Why do you have to convert the files when CS4 offers native XDCAM EX timelines in Premiere?

With all the problems I've been reading about playing HD footage on a PC, the last thing I would expect is that it would work. Well it works great on my NOT so fast PC. The 720p tests play perfectly, and the 1080p files are almost perfect. Can't wait till the i7 arrives next week. Should be like a rocket. I'm sure I will have a few more questions.
Thanks

Those problems are because camera manufacturers are using shi*ty consumer/prosumer compression codecs and jacking up the bitrate. Like the 40mbps+ with AVC h.264 on the 7D.

DVCPROHD and XDCAM are professional formats. And it pays off in the editing process, you can actually use them without having to convert.

i7 should handle it very nicely.

Sounds like typical editing software. "Oh we support it" Not really.

Not sure if CS4 handles it natively then...it has the presets - which I assumed means support.

Patssle: Everything is going smooth so far. My next new ground is exporting the project for playback at a convention. I tested media exports to a number of different files and Uncompressed Avi. seems the closest to the original footage and plays back smoothly on my system. What's the best way to deliver the job for a clean HQ presentation. I will not have as much control over it once it leaves my computer? Any more good suggestions?

So CS4 does play back the EX3 files natively? No need to convert?

For presentation, I'm assuming you're playing back from a computer? It really depends on the computer used. Does it have Quicktime, or is it a Mac?

If it's just a computer hooked up to a projector, make several encoded files. A Quicktime, WMV, Flash - that way you are covered. Uncompressed isn't a good delivery format.

Yes the original EX3 1080p files imported normally and played perfectly after rendering the timeline. The 720p slow motion shots played without rendering the timeline. Big surprise to me because even though my PC has a 1600 Quad ready motherboard I never got around to upgrading the old Dual Core processor. The i7 PC I'm setting up this week should be very fast.
I'm worried about the playback though. I just know how fast clean footage can get degraded in lower rez files. In my procoder3 I converted to every different file and they never look as good. I never worked with Blueray disks. Could that be a possability?

Lets have the specs of your new PC?

I am buying a new desktop next year to take advantage of Windows 7 and lots of RAM.

RAM, HD etc

Great to hear, thanks! Considering an HVX to EX1R upgrade.

Here are a few still frames from the CS4 timeline. Not bad for a Dual Core PC running only 2 gigs of ram.

Here is what I just picked up. Of course I wanted more, but it was all the cash I had in my pocket today. I'm still going to run my Widows XP Pro 64 bit and can change later, but this will get me where I have to go this month. I'll let you know how it works out after I test it, but it looks impressive even before I power it up.

ASUS P6TD DELUXE 1366 Motherboard
INTEL CORE i7-920 2.66GHz
ASUS EAH 4870 DK 1gig VGA
CORSAIR 3GB . 3 X 1GB DDR3
i-CUTE Casing / ENLITE 750W Sniper Power
2x 250GB SATA System HDs (I always set up a clone system HD backup)

If I had more cash I surely would have spent it. It has 3 more memory slots so I can add 3x 2GB CORSAIR which will give me 9 gigs of Ram to top it off.

If You Smelllllllllllll What The Rock Is Cookin'

Nice one....I will be interested to hear your comparisons with the old system.
Maybe some comparison tests with rendering?

Good luck with it and I hear you about wanting/spending more if you could.

The i7 is pretty unbelievable. I just loaded up my EX3 files and they play smooth as silk from both full 1920x1080p at 25fps and 720p shot at 60fps without rendering the time line. Just imported about 4.5 gigs of files at a time that I burned to DVD as backup. 4 gigs loaded and conformed in about 20 sec. and I was working. It even plays perfectly with grading from 3 or 4 different corrections without rendering the time line. I went through 2 1/2 hours of footage, about 150 files, and did a quick grade on everything in about 4 1/2 hours. I never rendered the time line once.
All I have left to say is I'm gonna go have a beer now.
