This is our new 48hours short film. Basically you get 48hours to complete a 7min short film.

We shot this using Sony Ex3 (default picture profile) and Canon 5DII(default picture profile). There are some major differences in color. I personally think the Canon deliveries way better color than EX3.

Canon lens used:
70-200mm f2.8 IS L
50mm f1.4
24-70mm f2.8 L
16-35mm f2.8 L

See it yourself here:

The opening sequence was shot on 5D II.

Ex3 footage - The intro of Sidney (01:08 - 01:44)
Ex3 Wood chopping scene(2:01-2:03) vs 5D (2:10)

You can easily spot the colour differences...

I wouldn't say that EX3 shot is representative of the color the camera is capable of. Were you using any picture profile? The Default is basically nothing. It looks washed out. You need to maybe check out the Vortex Media PP for a great starting point for general shooting. It's recommended that you use a custom PP 100% of the time. Also I'm surprised you didn't do any color correction to match the scenes. It's good for a comparison, but it only takes a few seconds to get up a 3 way color corrector and bump up the saturation a little and march the color to the other camera.

All in all I dig the 48 hr film you made. I wish the little guy would have won the girl though. They could have lived off the meat of the big guy for months!

Professional video cameras such as the EX1/3 and A1 are designed to have the footage color graded by default to retain the highest amount of color data by (hopefully) not blowing out the highlights or crushing the blacks.

Adjustments then made by use of gamma curves and contrast combined rather than just contrast adjustments at least have the possibility of retaining the full spectrum of data.

Consumer level cameras have no option for professional grading, its always saturated. The 5D, though I like the camera, crushes the blacks. (IMHO its to help hide the aliasing.) With the 5D, 7D, GH1, etc (yes I have one) you are more or less stuck with whatever you get. If you crushed it or burnt it you're toast.

By using the default settings you are only proving that the EX1/3 are more versatile cameras.
