EX3 Pics

These are some pics of my EX-3 including the PHU-60k. Anyone who is interested in the drive, I would highly recommend it. Transfers files really fast and has enough room for about 4 hours of HQ video. The fit is also very good and actually counter balances the camera so that it's not so front heavy.

looks nice. I own an EX1 and am very interested in the PHU-60k. How has it worked for you? Do you like it more than the SxS?

I am thinking about getting one if they are reliable enough. From the specs that Ive seen on the web, they seem pretty solid.

Cheers,

wow PHU-60k is out? man I want one, I've been waiting for it since I got the EX1,
where did you get it , can't find it on B&H site

How does the PHU-60K affect the balance of the camera?

While the handling of the EX-3 is better than the EX-1, I am finding (after a couple of days) that the EX-3 has a tendency to pull downward to the left. It is not balanced as well as I initially thought, and I'm wondering what adding that hard drive and battery to the rear shoe does to it?

I purchased the drive from taperesources.com. I got the last one they had in stock, but pretty sure they will get more.

The drive is really solid and the transfers speed was surprisingly fast. I grabbed a 30 sec clip from my a drive and transferred it to the b/hard drive and it was only a matter of seconds. Best to backup as you shoot rather than wait till your card is filled.

I've always had issues with the camera being front heavy. The battery helps center the weight and feels a lot better in my opinion. Could just be me....

How do you think it would throw off the balance on the EX1? I am using the EX1 on Steadicam alot and I hope that the drive can be configured in a way to give the camera more stability.

Whats the weight of the unit?

Also, could you possibly take a photo of the bottom of the unit? I was searching online and cant seem to find any photos of the bottom.

how much did you pay for the PHU-60k?
Now, I canoot imagine how to handheld the EX1 with the PHU-60k and VCL-EX-0877 WA lens?

It's about a $1000.00. Unfortunately, it will not work the EX-1 until they release a firmware upgrade for that camera.

As I was reading the spec on the hard drive, this is what it said on the site posted above.

4. Slow & Quick Motion recording: The PHU-60K does not support Slow & Quick Motion recording. To record in these modes you need to use an SxS card.

Yeah, the drive does not record slow mo, but I use the drive primarily for backing up my sxs. I don't record directly to the drive at all - just move data from A to B and keep drive A clear to shoot more.

Very interesting. Can you transfer over/undercranked (slo-mo/timelapse) from SxS to the PHU-60k? And if so, any idea on the data rate for the transfer? My interest in the PHU-60k might be on the upswing!

Kinda dumb on Sonys part. They bring out a Hard Drive that works with the EX3 but doesn't work with the EX1 until they have firmware for it? Thats like saying "You can use the Firestore with the HPX170 but you can't use it with the HVX200."

Yes, you can move over under and over crank files to the hard drive with no problems. Just did a test and it plays fine from the HD. You just can't record onto the drive over/under cranked.

I wonder if the firmware update is coming soon so that EX1 users can use the HD? I can't imagine that they'd make everybody send back their cameras just for an update.

Well, another problem is that there is no where to mount it on the ex-1. The HD requires a battery to power it, so it ends up being a little heavy.

Perfect for the ex-3, but not necessarily the ex-1.

Charles: Could you describe in brief how you do your transferring from the cards to the drive. How are you verifying that the files are indeed on the phu before deleting contents from card? Is there an LCD? I think your method would be very helpful during interviews.

Getting my EX3 in next week. I can't wait to test out that Hard Drive. It's something I won't use that much personally but it's nice to have.
