EX3 my 2 cents

I shot the DNC in Denver a few weeks ago with my new EX3, got it a few days before the convention started along with a new Lectronics wireless. Here are a few observations from the 6-day/12-hour-days shoot:

--Shot 720 30p high quality - end product = govt cable tv show

--Images are awesome, inside the Pepsi Center, outside in bright sun, at night during mass arrest scene in near dark, and in the dark for the finale fireworks display at Mile Hi Stadium

--used a BEC wireless mic rig affixed to bottom of camera with 2 wireless mics hanging by it on right side of camera, caused severe imbalance but the entire shoot was hand held, run and gun so it worked out fine in the long run. On less frantic-paced shoots using tripod, I'm taping the Lectronics receiver to the bottom of the shoulder brace and that works ok too.

--weak point on the camera for me was the rubber eye piece, flimsy as can be and it came off at slight brush up against a protestor, twice, but fortunately friendly folks grabbed it for me. I'm considering using a couple pieces of gaffer's tape to keep it more stable.

--red "on" light at back of the handle is useless when you're shooting run and gun cause you can't see it (can I make the red light in the viewfinder bigger so I know cam is on?). It'd be nice to have one somewhere in front.

--lens got dirty easily out in the elements, and getting it clean again was tough, and yes I was using a UV filter but didn't carry air, just lens cleaner juice

--weight of the camera to produce those awesome images was negligible for me, as my previous camera was Sony DSR300, so the EX3 seemed light as a feather even after holding it for 10 hours

--bottom line, great hand held run-and-gun camera - camera arrived three days before the event began so it was definitely learn on the job training, have used it on a feature doc since then and the image choices are mind boggling

--workflow in the field was a MacBook Pro 17" no gloss laptop, dumping the cards (only had two 16 and one 8 Gb) to a portable LaCie drive (I've had great luck with LaCie over the years by the way).

--backed up the portable LaCie clips to 1Tb drives when I got home, no loss of clips, fortunately

--also, thanks to all on here who steered me to a Kata 502 backpack, great bag, everything fit fine and velcro'd down tight

--a bit hard to get used to the tiny buttons and switches compared to my old camera, but a great camera overall, light for long hand held situations, capable of much more in terms of image acquisition than I asked of it during the DNC shoot.

--didn't have rain gear for it, anybody know where to go for that?
thanks...

Frank...You certainly hit the ground running with the EX3.

What sort of Picture Profile Settings did you use for the different lighting conditions.....interior, sunlight and night???

 Hey Frank, I have a suggestion; modify a head sweat-band for around the eye-piece. Get a thick one and modify it to fit around the eye-piece by cutting and patching it if necessary. It blocks the light, is comfortable, and prevents the eye-piece from foging up from humidity, and if someone hits you from behind while shooting, you won't have an eye ball print on the viewing glass. -- Carl

Thanks much, guys, re: nice words, rain gear and the sweat band /eye piece fix! As for picture profiles, I shot with the settings as they came from the factory and I'm just starting to experiment. Lots to learn in that regard.

One other odd /funny thing from shooting the DNC -- first day, we walked onto the Pepsi Center grounds and were stopped by the "frequency police." Apparently the networks etc. had assigned audio frequencies months earlier, and when a guy from Fox News spotted my EX3 with two wireless receivers he refused to let us inside the building. After a bit of haggling with the cops, he invited us up to the Fox booth where we were "frequency coordinated." They reconfigured our audio channels, put stickers on our wireless antennae, and sent us merrily on our way, free to shoot Anderson Cooper, Diane Sawyer, Ben and Jen, Ralph Nader, Al Sharpton.... oh, and an Obama look-alike that a Miami tv station imported/exported to Denver for the week.
Thanks again!

I have the EX1. I held onto the EX3 and thought it was overly junky.
The back of the camera when you tape on it is hollow sounding. The camera is nothing more than the ex1 with a removable lens and extra plastic.

My one dislike of my EX1 is it is not put together nicely.
I compare my EX1 to my DVX and notice side by side, the body parts on the Sony do not meet each other properly. The DVX, everything is tightly put together.
Dont get me wrong, I do prefer the image of the EX1 over any other HD camera. Im frustrated that the actual making of the product is so cheap.

Durability is also important to me. Even the printed words on my camera are already wearing off. Grrr!

The EX3 is a great camera, but is a bit left-heavy with the viewfinder/LCD. Though the buttons are in a different spot vs. the EX1, you get used to it pretty quickly. There are some additional menu options, like a black balance, but otherwise it's identical to the EX1 (menu-wise).

The lens is great, and the fact that it's interchangeable makes it a winner in my book. I also like that there is a 2/3" lens mount adaptor so the "big gun" lenses can be used, in addition to the 1/2" lenses.

All in all, a pretty cool camera.

what is the crop factor when using the 2/3" lenses?

We haven't had a chance to put a 2/3" lens on yet, but as soon as we do, I'll post up some pix and the crop factor.
