EX1's big brother?

I heard from "a reliable source", HA, :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) that the EX1 codec allows for 100mbs 4-2-2 capabilities. He was pondering an EX1 purchase and had me looking at it. He says it's likely that Sony will soon unleash this ability in the next gen camera.

I was just wondering if any of you can confirm this possibility of 100mps and 4-2-2?
As for when Sony would release such a camera is anyone's guess and I won't speculate. That can happen with any product. But it's got my source worried and me curious of future capabilites.

thats alot of speculation.

i would be VERY impressed if they allowed for 100mbps 4:2:2 XDcam.

If the current codec can do 4:2:0 at 35mbps, then you only need 33% more bandwidth to do 4:2:2. That would bring the data rate up to 45-47mbps. Add 2 more audio channels and you have ~50mbps.

That's half the data rate (and half the data storage) of DVCPro HD. And you get a full 1920x1080 instead of 1280x1080. But it's still long GOP, so you may also get motion artifacts if you shake your camera violently.

I'd be curious to see how Sony prices the 2/3 inch cameras.

2/3" PDW 700 is $37,000. And it doesn't record to solid state, it only uses the spinning discs.

The speculation about the XDCAM 100mbps 4:2:2 may be related to the Convergent Designs XDR flash recorder. Someone on DVInfo from Convergent said that they're using a Sony compression chip in there, and the XDR supports 100mbps 4:2:2, as well as 160mbps IntraFrame 4:2:2. However, there's no way to know whether that particular chip is implemented in the XDCAM cameras, and even if it was, Sony's discs don't support those data rates so don't expect to see 100mbps implemented any time soon.

I heard the 2/3" PDW 700 is not going to have 24p. If this is true it's another BAD decision by Sony.
