ex1r vs. scarlet 2/3? Any thoughts?

The epic 2/3 seems to be the only one within the price range of an ex1r and the interchangeable 2/3 being $2750 plus accessories, lens, etc. I am guessing total cost is around $7,000. So my question is what are the benefits to have an ex1r and or a 2/3 scarlet. what suits them best. feature films in particular maybe?

Thanks a lot guys Im sure the question has been asked a ton of times but now that we have a clear definition of what the scarlet is going to be maybe you guys can offer your insight.

Oh and does red work with fcp? or only redcode?

now that we have a clear definition of what the scarlet is going to be

Where is there a clear definition of what the Scarlet is going to be? The last I saw, which I believe was the 11/30 announcements, it was the usual concept renderings and hypothetical specs, with the standard Red "count on everything changing" language.

from what ive read finding lenses for the 2/3" scarlet will be expensive since 35mm lenses *mostly* arent the answer.

to go wide you need to have about a 6mm or so which should get around 21mm. forget 35mm lenses unless you are looking for extreme telephoto. there is something like a 3.5x crop factor.

also from what i have gathered it would almost be more logical to get the scarlet with the s35 instead of the 2/3" since getting glass will be cheaper and more friendly.

the only slightly economical deal is the scarlet with the fixed lens but that seems kind of limiting with only a 8x.

im still waiting to see how much a rig cost when it has all of the necessary extras added on.

im not in the market for any red myself but i hope they have great success, plus it will force everyone else to compete even harder.

yea i basically ment from the 11/30 announcement. So compared to a 2/3 would an ex1r be a better buy? given that the specs of the scarlet remain the same.

I would think the workflow efficiency would be superior on the XDCam, whilst you'll probably get shallower depth of field with the Scarlet.

RED is a status symbol camera, sort of like owning a BMW SUV. XDCam is sort of like the Ford Expedition SUV, very capable and still quite luxurious, yet not a status symbol.

Theoretically a Scarlet will give a much cleaner image than the EX line. Plus the ability to overcrank to 150p is pretty amazing.

And though, from RED's success I believe they will be able to deliver, and I'm hopeful the Scarlet will be all that it promises to be, I'm reserving judegment until I see some footage.

the 150fps is bad a$$.

basspig,
the DOF for the 2/3" is only minimal compared to the EX 1/2". not enough to get too excited about IMO. years ago i had a 2/3" camera but cant say my EX1 feels that much different. now the S35...thats a different story.

RED status symbol? for some of the people that enjoy being a snob i guess. i dont think its worth much more than that though. from much of what i read there are many Red One owners offering up their rigs for rental for cheap and many times including themselves with the package. i gather many went into hock getting the R1 package and figured they would pay for it by renting when not using but they are a dime a dozen and many are eating them for lunch it seems. this is not a knock against the R1 in the least and i have respect for the product itself. im not sure where the status symbol comes into play though, maybe in *ones* own heads i suppose. in practice its just a piece of equipment that will or wont be right for a given job and how much does it cost to rent or buy vs another brand.

Waiting for RED.

I will be upgrading to Scarlet from my EX1 since I want a smaller and lighter backpack camera setup. The picture quality will be better but the data rates are larger - so you need lots of hard drives. With that said, I'm hoping to see more competition from Canon, Sony, and Nikon.

FYI - I passed on my RED 1, #217 and bought and EX1 instead with no regrets. I did not want to beta test RED - there was no sound at that build - so I saved a bunch and went with the EX1. Scarlett was what I wanted RED 1 to be - smaller, autofocus, 2/3rds, fits in a backpack and can be carried on in a plane under 25 pounds. RED 1's now illegal batteries were the nail in the coffin and the overall weight was too much for a backpack requiring larger tripods heads, etc... I run and gun.

EX1 would seem to be the ultimate run & gun cam (with a Rode stereo mic on it). The Red cameras require some extra work to realize finished video. And I'm not a fan of they way Red renders colors with its single-chip. Kinda' like my Canon HV20.
I'm really liking the EX footage, moreso when I watch a wall-sized image of it. I often wonder how much better it would look if I could capture the SDI stream and lightly compress it to Blu-ray disc. I have some amazing Quicktime footage I rendered out (PhotoJPEG @ quality 97) with post sharpening on footage I shot with Detail Off, and it looks amazing. It's just jaw-dropping for it's "20/20-vision-like" clarity, dynamic range and color rendition. I keep thinking, "Why can't rented Blu-ray movies look this good?"
