EX1R - Still Good Value?

Hey Guys-

Just looking for some thoughts on whether or not the EX1R is still worth getting.

I generally shoot on DSLRs and the Blackmagic Pocket, but I really miss having an all-in-one body.

I can get a used EX1R in good condition for about $3500.

I'd use it mainly for documentary work and live events.

Think it'd be worth it, or am I better off either getting another body in the same range or saving for something newer?

(I don't need 4K yet)

totally worth it.

i miss my ex1

shame they never came out with a 2/3" version of it, i would make sweet sweet love to such a camera

I would say. I dont need 4k (YET!!!!) and do more work where shallow DOF is a detriment rather than a bonus (runnin around broll, presentation/lectures). Ive been looking into one myself...only question is whether to bite bullet and get one from b&h or similar or try to get a sweet ebay/message board deal and potentially get a dud.

Absolutely. The EX1 is sharper than a DSLR... With better audio than a DSLR... It's a workhorse where I make a living... in the corporate / industrial market. I don't need 4K, nor will my clients pay for it. As a matter of fact, since used EX1's are so reasonable right now, I've picked up a few extra for matched-multi-camera shoots. I love my EX1.

Where'd you find 'em and what made you trust whoever you bought them from? Or did you go somewhere "official" like B&H where you know (I'm assuming?) those cameras would be properly vetted before being sold?

I'm actually thinking of selling my Ex1. I don't use it that often. Plus I need something better for low light situations since I shoot in nightclubs. But I'm also curious of trying the Atomos Shogun on this when it comes out and using the BNC connection. Do you think its worth keeping or should I sell it?

I think the large sensor cams are the low light kings. Atomos whozzitz gives improved color space, doesn't it? Don't know if affects low light performance. Suspect not.

AS you can see below, they're everywhere Josh. Just bought one locally for $1,500 from a videographer I know who took reasonable care of it. He's moving on to a Canon C300. Nice camera but pricey. I think I got the better bargain.

If you need an event camera and are looking at the EX1R, I would seriously consider the EX3 instead. The EVF with the diopter puts this camera way ahead of the EX1R in terms of practical usefulness. There is also the I/O but the EVF makes this camera.

@Andrew - ah yes, but the EX3 does not fit into an international airline carryon very well because of that EVF. That's limited me to EX1Rs. EX1Rs also get less attention when shooting candid style.

OTOH, attach a half inch B4 lens to an EX3 for the extra reach on conference shoots... ;)

My two EX1s have thoroughly earned their keep and continue to earn money on conference jobs.
