EX1R Shoulder Mount Red rock + Zacuto weight

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking to buy the red rock micro shoulder mount for my EX1R, I wonder if anyone
have it , does it work great ? I'm wondering if I should buy the zacuto weight (7lbs) which is less expensive than buying 3 little weight and the plate from the red rock to balance the rig....

Moreover, do you know if there is a quick release plate that could match the rig to be compatible with tripod ?

Thanks
Romain

I have the Redrock Micro shoulder mount and I think you should look at other options. I have been contemplating for a while if the Zacuto one would be better.
All the other Zacuto stuff I have is top notch, so my guess would be that their shoulder pad might be better as well but I have no way to test before buying.

I also meant to post this question here, anyone out there having used both Redrock and Zacuto shoulder pads? Which is better?
I feel the Redrock one can get uncomfortable after a while, especially with heavy rigs.

Thanks for reply, so you don't really recommand red rock ? Pity 'cause it looks quite comfy and less expensive than the Zacuto kit (only the weight is less...)
But yeah like you I'm waiting for some more reviews.

It's a tough call. I can't really advise against the Redrock one by default.
In general asking someone else for a opinion on a shoulder mount is a tough one because everybody has a different built body. I remember a photo of some big dude carrying a fully loaded Red rig like it was nothing on his shoulder)... so what someone experiences as uncomfortable might be nothing for someone else.

The Redrock shoulder mount served me well so far, it's definitely good value but as said, with a heavy rig (say over 10lbs/5kgs) it get's uncomfortable over longer periods. I had rigs as heavy as 12kg/25lbs on it, that's fine but only for a few minutes, you wouldn't do that all day and not feel all worn out after that.

What any of these shoulder pads lack in comparisson to a Pro ENG camera is that you can't adjust the size of the shoulder pad. Here's a wink to Zacuto, Redrock and co... we need new shoulder mounts which are size adjustable :)

I see. I think I should give it a try but my main concern is that if I want to switch from the tripod to the rig is there a quick release or something ?
So far as I know my camera is less than 4kg even with some accessories like wireless mic or else (EX1R) so should be ok, my concern is if I add a Zacuto weight is that alright enough to balance (because if you compare with the counter weight from red rock they're going down in the back of the shoulder which seems better to balance the rig but it's just my feeling...)

You can screw a tripod quick release plate on bottom of the redrock shoulder pad, I did that before and it works. I also happen to have the Zacuto weights and they're perfect to balance a camera of the likes of a EX1 etc. You can extend the 15mm rods further to the back to counteract front heaviness if the Zacuto weight is not enough or e.g. if you mount a additional monitor on front.

That rig from the link doesn't look like it's very comfortable to carry on your shoulder. I think if you buy Redrock / Zacuto parts you end up with a more expensive but better rig that is very flexible and also will last you a life time if treated properly.

Well I think it's easier to keep it stable on the shoulder, without it you support basically all the weight on your arm and wrist which can be quite tiring.

By the way, I see on your picture profile that you've got the new M3 from Red rock too, is that good compare too SGBlage or the Letus ? Thanks.

I haven't used either of those adapters, but I'm in love it with the M3. Gives the EX3 a whole new life, images seem comparable to the PMW-F3 in my opinion.

Well, I will see bu I guess this my best option for now. What about quick release to go with, any suggestion ?

I have been looking into new shoulder mounts for a possible 60D. has anyone tried Zacutos new Fast Draw SKU: Z-DFD,. It looks sweet but im wondering if it is worth the $.

Fast Draw is pretty pricey, I've only used the Zacuto Target Shooter. Which I didn't like at all, it'd be better than nothing but for the price there's a lot of better options.

Hey I kinda like the looks of this. I have 2 shoulder mounts already, and though they hold the camera fine, the weitht is either on my arms, or on my belly from an extension arm used for support. That means I get a sore spot on my stomach, and my breathing moves the camera - especially if I'm running around a lot. It would be cool if that thing had a way to hold stuff like a battery or recorder too.
