Ex1R - "odd" shutter speeds?

I know I'm going to seem stupid here but;

I just picked up my new EX1R two days ago and noticed something I thought was weird about shutter speeds.

I also own an FX1 and Z5 and I'm used to seeing shutter speeds like 1/30 and 1/15.

I see the Ex1R has 1/60 shutter for 60i but not 1/30? (or 1/15)

I also see that 24p can use a 1/32 speed? huh? I don't even see a 1/24 speed. (how does that math work?)

I also see a slow shutter option where I can select "2" as an option.

Should I believe that the EX1R's 1/60 shutter with a "2" slow setting is identical to the Z5's 1/30 setting? (recording 60i)

Can anybody point out my stupidity on this? lol

Thanks!

The "right" (and slowest) shutter speed for each fps is activated by switching the shutter off (i.e. 1/24th for 24 fps, or 1/30th for 30p etc).

The SLS is expressed by the number of accumulated frames in this mode (2, ...).

I hope this helps.

That "seems" to make sense to me. However, after searching Sony docs on this,...I see no reference to 1/24 sec. shutter speed at all for 24p

I dont see a 1/30th second shutter for 60i OR 30p shooting either. If they DO exist, why aren't they listed?

30p slowest is 1/40
25p slowest is 1/33
24p slowest is 1/32

What causes these odd metrics? You get 1/40th of a second exposure of a frame lasting 1/30th of a second? (I understand it when you "want" it be faster.)

I'm sure there is a logical reason that I'm just not understanding.

Turn the shutter switch off (under the lens on the front of the camera) and you'll get 1/24 in the 24p modes.

There's a lot of undocumented stuff about the camera and you'd do well to browse through this forum or purchase the Vortex Media EX1 Field Guide. I'm on these forums at least three times a week and I still learned a lot of useful info from Doug Jensen's book and DVD set.

I'm an idiot,...a great explanation of "shutter angle" did the trick!

I'm up to speed now!
