EX1R getting very hot

Hi,

I've just upgraded from the EX1 to the EX1R. I love the new camera and the improvements made but I have noticed the camera is a lot hotter on the back end near the SxS card bay (above it particularly).

Has anyone else noticed the camera quite warm around that area? Sometimes when I pull the SxS card out after shooting it is hot to touch.

Is this normal for the new EX1R?

Thanks in advance

I've noticed far more heat than was present on the EX1, though I have not experienced any errors due to the heat. I am using the Switronic battery. Anyone else?

This begs the question, "What's different about the R model that causes it to run much hotter?" Beyond a better filter, the increased heat means more power consumption, which could mean a more powerful processor resides in that model. Possibly to make SD downconversion possible. If it's truly running hotter, you should be seeing shorter battery run times. Have you noticed that your batteries last shorter, or about the same?

I'll use the same battery from the EX-1 and compare. The Cache is turned off. It undoubtedly runs hotter. Much. What worries me, is the heat is directly transferred to the SxS cards.

UPDATE: Tested with older batteries used on the EX-1. EX1R runs hotter.

I read somewhere that the extra heat is caused by the 'heating the battery'-trick to make a full battery deliver energy for a longer time.
Cold batteries are empty sooner than warm batteries.
In some cases it can be a good thing to add some heat (in cold conditions), but when the temperature is already high I can imagine it worries people.
In the latter case one could consider alternative batteries like the Swit S-8U62 or Dynacore DS-U65. These batteries use the DC connector to power the camera and I noticed less heat development.
Maybe I should do a comparising test before we al jump to conclusions (I used a DS-U65 for 4 hours non-stop yesterday without real heat development; the back just got a little warmer). Or is there anyone with the same experience?

If Sony eliminated the fan, that would improve battery run time because of less energy used to run the camera, but the camera would run MUCH hotter. This is not a good choice on Sony's part, if it is the case. I would not expect those models to keep running during an outdoor August wedding ceremony.

Thanks for the responses everyone. The camera hasn't failed on me but it does run very hot. However I do shoot in a fairly hot climate which probably doesn't help. Will keep my eye on it as I don't want a long shoot to melt on me one day.

The funny thing is that even though early reviews of the original EX1 over 2 year ago stated explicitly there IS a fan inside, the European Prime Support informed me lately there is NO fan at all!

This was the answer to my enquiry about the high-pitched squeal my EX1 is emitting when powered on; I suspected the fan but PrimeSupport said there is no fan, and the noise must be generated by some PCB.

BTW, can you guys hear the same, with your ear close enough to the camera, and in quiet surroundings?
