EX1R Available Now at B&H!

chad,

what is so much better about the EX1R? is it a make it or break it from the original?

The R model has a better viewfinder, IR filter, Records in SD 4:3, one button slow/quick motion, better handle, better buttons, but it's the exact same picture and lens. It's not worth it to upgrade really, but since my 2nd EX1 is a prize, to pay an extra 700.00 for an R model isn't a big expenditure, though throw in 500.00 if I want a protection plan for 3 years...

I most likely wouldn't have bought a second camera due to the high price. At least not this soon. So having a 2nd is quite a boon for me. I may just keep what I have, because it's an awesome camera as the EX1 without the R. And even kicking down 700.00 is still a lot of money. I am putting out feelers to see if anyone is interested, and if no deal is struck I am none the less a happy camper.

I have tested the camera and it works like a charm.

As a side note I tried out my new Rode NTG-3 at Thanks Giving dinner walking around the house with the mic on the cam, and found it to be a wonderful sounding mic. Even indoors! It blew me away how great it sounded. Though as a home movie mic you can barely hear the camera man making smart a**ed comments due to the superb directionality. I left the EX1 at the default trim setting of -41db, put the audio level at 6, with the signal split to both channels, and I got a nice level, no noise, and suprisingly no clipping. There were some cackles from some lady guests who had a little too much to drink that I expected to blow out the level, but the limiters saved it smoothly. Nice mic. Nice camera.

had you considered just selling the new EX1 and buying something else that might give you some very different options visually like a...5DmkII and a couple of really good lenses?

might be nice to have options for that creamy shallow DOF?

i could see if you want to have a second EX1 for match clips but if you only shoot one angle at a time then a 2nd EX1 is only really useful as a backup. something totally different could be nice.

im getting very close to finishing a music video of a rock band that i shot entirely with the 5DmkII. lenses used were just a 135mm 2.0L, 35mm1.4L and a 16-35mm 2.8L which was on a Steadicam. no AC available for most of the locations so i used small batteries (about the size of a motorcycle battery) powering a few 26w flourescents which were 100w equivalents. averaged around 3200-6400 iso for the better part of the shoot. could never have come close with my EX1 as far a getting a decent picture.

i wouldnt just want to own a DSLR if i could only have one camera but as an alternative it is pretty cool to have with a very contrary look. it could really WOW some clients with some polar opposite visual looks.

surely though if someone needs a second camera they will go for something that they can match up with picturewise with their main camera.

I have an EX3 but I'd only ever consider another EX as my second camera.

A lot less hassle matching up something in the same stable.

David I hear what you are saying. Having an alternate type of camera can be cool. And if I was buying my own 2nd camera, a DSLR option is very attractive because you get an awesome DSLR for stills, AND an HD camera suitible for production wortk with the cool factor of using prime lens' that won't break the bank. However for my purposes I have to agree with EIREHotspur in that I want a second camera to match the first. I do video for a living, and the types of 2 cam jobs I would do are live shows, interviews, or even indi films where I am looking for the scene to have the same look between the multiple cameras. I don't want someone to notice how the alternate angle looks different, cool as it may be, because I want the camera work to be invisible. A music video is something that having varying looks within the same segment would be cool, but not for what I imagine.

I shot a set of my own band using 2 buddies - one on an EX1, and one on an HV20. The 2 cameras were a drag to try to match up for a cohesive look, and the 2 codecs were not fun to work together as there was lots of rendering. I managed to get it together and looking pretty similar but it was too much work.

Here's an example (I'm the guy playing lead and singing): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4wXf7UgY34

I'm sure you'll be able to tell which angle is the EX1. And BTW the light there was very red, and I was fighting to get the skin tones to look more natural.

Now, maybe a 3rd camera for me could be a DSLR! LOL

although i have mixed my EX1 with my 5DmkII and been fairly happy, most of the time each camera represented something very different rather than trying to get excatly the same look.

of course and interview would be a prime example of 2 matched cameras and wouldnt cut well between the EX1 and 5DmkII and i wasnt suggesting that it would.

for me the possibilities of owning very different cameras would be more like a Strat thru a Fender twin vs a Les Paul thru a Marshall stack. you would be less apt to be able to do a heavy rock gig with the Strat/Fender or a clean funky gig with the Les Paul combo. so having the other as an optiion opens up some doors IMO.

as far as HDMI that someone asked? who cares really. i either convert my DSLR files to Pro Rez or XDCAM EX it i plan to mix it with my EX1. i dont know why anyone would bother to try to edit from an unfriendly file that will bring your computer to its knees.

that is assuming that one always has a need to shoot *matched clips*. sure, there is a lot of stuff that would make use of matched clips but there is a lot that wouldnt either, so i guess it really depends on what someone is shooting.

can i assume that you rent a 2nd camera everytime you go to shoot or do you just make due with your single EX3?

I make do with 1 camera for now.....the new features of this camera though and fact that it is really a second generation EX1 make we veer towards this as a second camera for purchase next year rather than a second EX3 which is what I thought I would get.

I also would like it so that it gives me a bit more freedom when choosing a stabilizer rather than my EX3. I could go for the Steadicam Pilot rather than the more expensive LE.

BTW: The Canon 5D2 is on my list for next year too although for photos.....I wouldn't bother using the video on it TBH.

astigmatic

The camera works beautifully. Since I want to have two EX1 cameras, I'm not interested in a trade. I have two now, but if I can get an EX1R by selling one and putting down a nominal amount that's what I will do. If it doesn't happen I'm still way happy.

The EX1R should be 1+ stop more sensitive than the EX1 with an IR filter attached as the IR issue is solved without the additional filter on the EX1R.

The EX1R also ships with a 16 GB SxS card where the EX1 shipped with a 8 GB card.

I would definately try pretty hard to sell the EX1.

Now that we have a firm release date for the Scarlet 2/3" and the Scarlet S35, I wonder if the EX line will start to lose some of its steam. The 2/3" is coming in at under 5K.

In regard to the image size of the three 1/2 inch cmos sensors in the ex1r how does its total size compare to the single sensor in the 7d? how much bigger is the one in the 7d? I tried looking it up but cannot seem to find an accurate answer.

p.s in order to get the total sensor size of the ex1r should i multiply the size of the each 1/2" sensor by three?

release dates change.. plus I'm sure there will be a long waiting list. I don't expect the scarlet to affect ex sales for at least a year.. just a guess though.
