ex1 workflow in fcp

about to start my first project using footage from an ex1, I'm editing in fcp 7 on a mac pro 8 core. what's the best workflow for importing and converting the footage?
thanks for your help!

there are some that like to use some variant of Pro Rez but i usually just use the stock XDCAM EX. i use my MacBookPro for importing since its got an Express slot built in then transfer files to my 8 core. its slow as can be if you just hook up your EX1 for importing roughly 1.6x (?) speed coming from the EX1. from an express slot i think speeds are around 6-7x speed if i remember correctly. if you dont have a card reader i would strongly consider getting one unless you have a lot of time on your hands.

the XDCAM files work good on an 8 core.

you will need to get the necessary software/plugin for FCP for you to import into FCP.

thanks for the info, all the footage is being delivered to me on drives in the raw camera format so no worries on pulling from the camera. It's final delivery will be web based if that makes any difference on pro res vs xdcam
thanks!

i would expect that i am in the minority here but i dont have a problem with just using the native XDCAM format. on paper though the ProRez seems to be the winner i gather. even the "proxy" might even be better...haha!

when i got FCP 7 i did some tests comparing **performance** of the XDCAM EX vs the ProRez Proxy & LT in realistic timeline scenarios with plugs & transitions and honestly i couldnt see any benefit in the sense of performance. i thought possibly that Apple may have **OPTIMIZED** their new ProRez options. my testing was pretty loose but still there didnt appear to any performance gains over the XDCAM EX files. the file size of the upper end ProRez is really large. the LT & Proxy isnt as bad but still...cant find a **real world reason*** to use it.

like i said im probably in the minority here.

good luck
