EX1 with 35mm adaptor, or new camera. Cost vs. benefit

Our EX1 is a damn solid camera, and more importantly, it's paid for. My only complaint is the lack of DOF. It's not bad, but any DSLR with a 2.8 lens or faster kills it. So for people who have moved from the EX1 to the AF100, is it really worth it? I could buy a used 35mm adapter for a couple hundred dollars vs. 5k and get better DOF. Now, if the picture quality of the AF100 is that much better, then that's a different story.

Thanks.

Get the 35mm adapter or at the very least do not sell the EX1 to get the AF100.

Why the lean against the AF100? I've been filming with it for countless hours and don't have a single complaint against the camera, anything I have had issues with, have been user error.

I sold my EX1 and Letus adapter to get the AF100. Zero regrets. Focusing on ground glass, all the extra weight, such a pain.

However, I shoot no event stuff and little "run and gun" (though I kind of like using the AF on the latter).

I've shot with the EX-1 and Letus, but never bought one. We had excellent results with that combination. Eventually, I bought the AF-100 and I love it. However, if you can still use that EX-1 for events, etc, it might be worth keeping, if (big if) you are working under controlled light with the adapter. The pictures are good but the loss of light has to be factored in. If you can add light, you're fine. If all you're doing is cinema style shooting, go for the AF-100. I think you'll be very happy. All the best with your decision.

Most of the shooting is controlled, corporate style stuff, but if it were event based, run and gun, I would just take the Letus off. For the users of both the EX and AF....is the picture quality of the AF that much better? Does it warrant shelling out another $6000?

I would say that if you don't have to crank up the gain on the EX-1, you and your clients would be happy with the EX-1 and the adapter regarding picture quality. As far as working with the adapter or the AF-100. The adapter can be a pain. If selling the EX-1 is not something you want to entertain then go for the adapter.
