EX1 SDI output

I want to know if you can connect monitors with a BNC connector but with analog signals to the EX1 . I have tried with 2 monitors with BNC inputs (analog signal i think) and I couldn't manage to see anything on them except a black screen. They only worked through the A/V out connector.

So SDI out means that you can only connect monitors and equipment with digital signals ?

SDI is inherently digital-only. SDI stands for Serial Digital Interface.

Are you wanting to connect to a regular composite video feed? If so, the SDI connector is totally not what you want to be using.

Yep...well i thought as long as they have BNC inputs any monitor will work. But as I can see this is not the case. This sucks in my opinion.

Is this a technical imposibillity or is it just Sony's choice to implement just the SDI interface in the BNC connector ?

BNC is a standard connector, and it can be used for many types of signals (including SDI, or timecode, or composite video). Sony did nothing wrong here, BNC was the proper connector.

If you want composite video to a composite video monitor, you'd have to use the AV Out jacks (if I'm even remembering properly; hopefully some EX1 owner will correct if I've misstated).

Yup... For composite video, use the proprietary Sony AV out plug (one of the little things I don't like about this great camera) with the supplied AV cable. Be sure to go into the menus, to have the HD-out turned off so that the "Video Out" will be turned on.
If you want to see the picture in Hi Def, go into the menus and turn on the HD out, then use the Sony RGB proprietary cable (both AV and RGB Out cables are supplied) and plug that into a monitor that accepts RGB... a superior picture, by far.

Hey FrankC,

I'm moving from the hvx to the ex1 and am currently using a Marshall HD monitor with compenent RGB. So if I understand you correctly, the EX1 does have a RGB compenent output similar to the HVX, correct? Want an HD signal on my monitor without having to upgrade to HD-SDI right now.

Thanks

Not to step on toes...but the EX1 has a RGB setup is much the same as the hvx. The only difference being the type of plug that conncets to the camera.

I hope that helps.

hi Gogu,

a BNC cable attached to the EX1/SDI can be attached directly to the SDI "input" of a monitor with no problems ***IF*** the length of the BNC cable doesnt exceed more than around 6-8 feet long.

i just bought a Nebtek 70HDS and ordered an SDI cable that was just a little to short to reach from the EX1 to the Nebtek. i called a local pro video shop in town to see if i could get a longer SDI cable and the guy told me i can just use a standard BNC as long as i keep the length short. he said if the cable is too long...the screen will just be "black". he said "either it will work or it wont if its too long.

i had a 6 foot BNC but decided to call Nebtek to check if i could use this making sure i wouldnt casuse any kind of damage. Rob at Nebtek told me the same thing as the other guy.

end of story. the BNC works perfect!
