EX1 - Possible Eyepiece? Come w/Mic?

Hi Guys

Just a couple of quick questions.

1. Does the EX1 come with a little shotgun mic? It's pictured with one in the B&H catalog, but I'm not sure. For 6 grand they should break off a little hunk for us and include the mic I think.

2. Is there some sort of eyepiece you can affix to the LCD, as on the EX3, from either Sony or a 3rd party? Just wondering. I always use the LCD now with my VX2100, but might experiment with an eyepiece if I can get a decent one.

Thanks!

if you don't want a viewfinder that looks like a wizard sleeve, wait a bit for the hoodman hoodloupe for the ex1. the current hoodloupe works with an extender. they had the prototype at NAB. much cooler than the hood-pro jester hat. :)

the hoodman thing should be out soon and will be a $15 add-on to the standard hoodloupe.

Thanks for the info guys. As for the mic I wouldn't expect much, but all I have are longer shotguns. I was hoping for something short yet mono for simple non-critical stuff. No biggie. I like to use my Rode NT3 Hyper for most indoor stuff anyway, though it's probably too fat to fit in that little mic clip. I rarely shoot outside with mic audio so I don't need a shotgun for much. They sound bad indoors.

I've never heard of a "Wizard Sleeve" or a hoodloupe. I'll check that out. Thanks!

the onboard mics don't suck and probably work as well as a short ext. mic. good for scratch anyway.

the "wizard sleeve" or "jester hat" i was referring to can be seen at hood-pro.com. it's actually called the "sock loupe" but you be the judge....

the hoodloupe is made by hoodman. hoodmanusa.com

I did check out Phillip Blooms piece on the hood pro. It looks cool, though I also saw a couple guys complaining that it sags to the point they wish for some type of frame to hold it in place better. They are angling it up somewhat awkwardly to counter act this sagging. Anyway, I have this saved in my folder of EX1 accessories. I'm not used to using an eyepiece because my VX2100's doesn't look so hot. That being my first camera, I have never used any eyepiece! Same with still photography. I don't like shoving my face (with glasses) up to the camera. Luckily in the DSLR world they are starting to give live previews in the LCD. Still, if this jester hat thing will give me a great image with comfort, even with glasses (which I hear it does) I won't mind dropping $100.00 to have that option.

Hoodman is also coming out with something like this (below), though it looks uncomfortable.

I'm just glad we have these options with the EX1. I'm very close to getting one, and I'm happy I can do real broadcast quality stuff without having to bump up to the EX3. With $2,000.00 more in cost for the cammera, and $3,000.00 more for a second lens (the reason one would want an EX3) I could almost buy a second EX1!

Take care fellas...

if u like operating off of a screen then maybe you could just use a hood to block out the ambient light.

i see your point that the big furry eyepiece would work better with glasses. i hear the image quality is amazing too. it's just so big and ugly. that's the only thing keeping me from it. it looks home made and i wouldn't want a client to see it...

The Sock-Loupe is made in black. It is very effective in operation and if Philip Bloom doesn't think using it detracts from his professional status I think you will be OK.
