EX1 Plays CineKink

A 3-minute short I recently completed screened in NYC last night at a festival called CineKink, which bills itself as an alternative festival showcasing more "adventurous" films for an open-minded audience.

A friend transferred it straight off the FCP timeline onto BetaSP, which he recommended so as to soften any hard edges. Shot in HQ 1080/24p. It looked great on the big screen, no judder at all. Not quite like film, but not like video either.

Adult humor, not for the easily offended.

Very disturbing and funny! I thought the actors did a great job lip syncing. Did they really sing the song? I assume you recorded it before the shoot?

It looks like you just used available light (maybe I am wrong). It's hard to make a very brightly lit store look moody and cinematic, but that did not bug me.

You sure seem to know a lot about the subject ;-) Clever lyrics. How did you get the store?

Yes, the song was recorded beforehand and played back via iPhone on location, loud enough for the actors to hear and the mic to pick up. I should have had a line directly into the camera, which would have made syncing easier, but it wasn't that difficult once I got editing.

Those type of stores are so garishly lit, I think that's part of their "charm." We used one fill light on the camera for most of the shots with a gel to correct for the fluorescent balance. We also had a DC-powered 100-watt light on a stand that we used when we needed to bring up the background in some shots.

Getting the location was the hardest part of the project. I basically canvassed all the porno palaces on Eighth Ave., and finally found one owner who would even listen to me. He owns a number of shops, and suggested the one on 14th St. we eventually used. We shot starting at 6 am on a Sunday in December, and reshoots the same time a month later. I hope the Internet exposure gets him some business!
