EX1 or Scarlet?

Now that Scarlet is finally revealed...if it were available right now, which one would you get, the EX1 or Scarlet? Anyone going with the EX1 now that Scarlet is about a year away?

Depends on what your doing. If you are all into indie film making and nature films. I'd wait for the scarlet.
But if you also have to do weddings, events etc., I think you are better off with the EX1.

If it were available right now, I'd put them side by side, shoot low light, look at the footage, compare the workflows and depending on the total cost of switching and PQ difference I'd make a decision;
until then I keep my EX1,
I JUST LOVE IT! ! !
:-)

The EX-1 and the Scarlet are two completely different cameras ... well, to be fair only one of them is a camera - the other is a concept.
I would say if you plan on shooting anything within the next 18 months I'd probably lean towards the EX-1.
I think It has the upper hand right now in that it exists.

EX1 for versatility and Scarlet for dedicated movie making. I wouldn't want to shoot a wedding on a Scarlet. I personally will probably never need 3k. Or 2K for that matter so if I can get some clean 1080p, low noise and fast workflow oops that is the EX1. When folks start selling their EX1's I will probably buy one used.

In a perfect world, it would be out right now, but when RED says "coming 2009" note what they say a few lines under that ...

"SPECIFICATIONS, DELIVERY DATES AND DESIGN ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE... COUNT ON IT."

yeah, so not only will it probably be pushed back, you'll probably have to wait ANOTHER year to get your hands on it, and WHEN it DOES come out, it probably won't even be working properly. Are you shooting to IMAX? probably not right? get the EX-1 already. like bloom said, it's a TODAY camera.

Two differernt animals...
I own the EX1, and also will buy the Scarlet.

The Scarlet should be decent, but it's not going to be a camera like the EX1 where you shoot and moments later are playing back close to finished quality looking footage. Users who are shooting long events will probably not be using Scarlet for these applications.

If I successfully make some short films with my EX this year I'll probably reward myself with a Scarlet next year. I better get busy with my EX first.

One of the reasons I bought my EX1 is for full length indy feature production. The Red cameras (Scarlett included) are experimental concept cameras... not really ready for commercial use. I've read a number of posts on professional DP chat lines where most longtime DPs have had nothing but bad experiences with the Red. Most say you had better have an IT (Imaging Technician) on set at all times because the camera is very very finicky, drifting in and out of specs. I don't need that kind of grief, so I'll let the Red cameras simmer a while and see if they eventually become something dependable. Today...It's the EX1.

At these price points? Why the hell not get both?
EXACTLY!

Besides, there are other considerations. Do you need to shoot sometime in the next 15 months? Then rule out Scarlet, it's going to be probably 15 months away, EX1's available right now. Do you need to shoot video? Then rule out the Scarlet, because it's not a video camera. It's a raw digital cine camera, an entirely different beast.

Besides, we really don't know anything about what Scarlet will be. We've seen some goals printed on paper, but we also have the famous "specifications subject to change... count on it" disclaimer. Red One's specifications varied wildly from initial announcement to final announcement to initial delivery to (not even) final delivery. Anyone trying to make a decision about what Scarlet IS, based on the info we have now, is way, way premature. Check back in a year after the Red Team has had a chance to develop it. Things can, do, and will change -- of that you can be sure.

The EX1 basically is what it is. You know what it is, you can read user reports on it, decide whether it does what you want. If you're in business, you should be able to make it pay itself off long before the Scarlet even comes out, so it makes little sense not to get it now, if it's the right product for you. But if you don't have a NEED for it, why buy it at all?

Well put Barry.

I've been reading some responses from many on different forums and a some are thinking scarlet is going to make Panasonic and Sony obsolete.

Like you mentioned, Scarlet is not a typical video camera where you point and shoot and instantly be abe to review near post quality footage.

It only takes a session on the RED ONE (as you know) to realize what's involved in the process is intense.

Having said that, all of us Panny, Sony, Canon what-have-you users are all buying the Scarlet. Heck, why not.

Yeah I say get both but in truth who knows when the Scarlet will ship. If you had to buy something today you'd have only the EX1 to choose from between those two. When Scarlet does actually ship- which could be sometime in 2009 I suspect Sony and the other folks will have more new cameras in the wings. So as always, it's a moving target. Buy what you need today- period.

Spot on Luis

Two very different cameras for two very different markets. When it comes out I am sure I will get one at that price point but if you are waiting for it over the ex1 then that's upto 18 months of time when you could be out shooting beautiful pics!

In general, you just need what works for you ... that can advance your work ... certainly pay for itself if you can get the work. I'll most likely pick up the EX3 because it will work for me for quite a bit of time to come. Scarlet ... later ... let Red work on it.
