EX1 Night Vision

Any advantage our men and women can have on the battleground is welcomed in my book. Nice edit, kept my interest through out.

Thanks, Richard. Also, saw your trailer for your short, cool stuff... great opening, just wish there was more after the guys burst through the door!

Here are some photos of this ridiculous jerry rig set up that I use... The reason it's so jerry rigged is because when I got called out on this particular shoot to Ft. Bragg, it was initially a day shoot only... Then the client got a hold of a nightvision device and wanted to do a night shoot of a live fire as well... I had about 3 hours to figure out how to mount the NV on the front of my camera so... I came up with a Pencil holder with the bottom cut off with a card holder zip tied inside as the housing for the night vision PVS14, which was also zipped in. The whole rig was then supported by a zacuto articulating arm... Doesn't look pretty, but I think it gets the job done...

Shooting in NV is a pain... because it's a night shoot, I had to use the eyepiece to film which makes it very difficult to walk around using your camera as your guide... also, the PVS 14 has a focus ring on it as well which doesn't really work too well once the NV is housed inside the jerry rig unit... needless to say the ENVG footage seeing in the vimeo footage was more of a hand held concept due to the amount of motion.

You, sir, are the McGyver of video!

Do you use the rails often or was it luck that you had them with you?

I went on the shoot with rails because I was doing some Letus shots... Originally we were supposed to have an LCD for the shoot (couldn't anyway during NV because of how much light it gives off), hence the articulating arm, didn't end up using the LCD but totally got my money's worth out of the arm. Goes to show you can never have too much gear... Also, special thanks to Office Depot.

I upgraded the ghetto rig.... Used Zacuto parts, mainly universal baseplate and articulating arm with quick release to create another version of the ENVG (thermal/night vision monocular). There is a break out cable for full rez imagery from the sensor itself, unfortunately, we didn't have the cable and the client also wanted to "swing" away the sensor... "Luckly" I haven't sent in my broken articulating arm that has stripped ball heads so the swing away feature worked like a charm... I'm not sure anyone else is trying to shoot night vision or not, but I figured I'd post it.

Also, I tried a bunch of different configurations with my Letus / nikons, nothing really worked out and I also didn't have a shoulder mount or way to balance all that glass without stumbling around in the dark.

More images/video to come...
