EX1 Music Video

I shoot a music video on the EX1 and ended up buying one for a 6 month web project I was hired to do.

The EX1 project is under both the DP and Director section (see if you can work out the navigation he he..)

www.levinspictures.com

The video is for Craine "end of the line"

I used the EX1 as I needed good low light capability's on a budget and on this project I wanted something that was small and simple to handle as I was wearing a few too many hats :-)

The Video is based on some animation that was rear projected behind the performers in a empty warehouse. I got one of the brightest projectors I could find for less than £1000 a day rental.

originally I planed to have a LCD display behing the band but it was too costly. I think it worked out well as I feel the plastic sheeting and powerful projector give a unique look as it illuminates the picture and acts as a back light. on the day I found that I needed the throw a bit more back light on the band so I used a couple of pups as well. but other than that all the light is from the projector.

I used floor underlay as the backdrop as it was the biggest semi-transparent plastic I could find that matched the tight budget.

I think the track made it to 7 on the UK indie chart (BBC)

Very nice!

Great skills......

Nice to see someone not afraid of the dark!

I think the plastic worked out great! Much more organic/analog looking. Those LED panels can look sterile sometimes.

I had to look at it a couple of times.

Maybe show some production stills if you have them.

Everything is great on your site Adam.
How did you do the time affect on "Nightjoy" Did you record with the music slow and then speed up the video?

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

To answer your question no. Although I have used a simalar effect to what you describe in the past.

If you have a look at JYNXT The Name, this is what I did with the pillow fighting scene.

I actually shot this video about 5 months ago. We did have a couple people snaping pics I will chase them up for some stills. We had the projector on a cherry picker which looked quite cool :-)

ehh, it's alright. i think this looks SUPER video-ish ... too many zooms back and forth. i think the editing is definitely lacking in some areas as well.

thought the idea of the projection was cool, but the overall shots/cinematography of the video were very basic and repetitive. just my thoughts !

Thanks for checking it out. I visited your site and I especially like the look of "Haste the Day" what did you shoot it on?

I am aware that the look is "video-ish" but then I am not one of those who subscribe to the theory that all video need to emulate film stock. I also had the gain up between 6db and 12db on some shots so I was breaking all sorts of rules :-) but the video played quite a bit on UK TV channel "fizz" and on MSN UK so I guess they must have been OK with the quality.

For more of a classic "film look" check out "I See You" on my site which was shot with the newish fuji ETERNA Vivid 160. I like that stock as it is the first High Contrast stock to be developed for some time.

I do love shooting on film but sometimes there are projects were it is just not feasible.

Best....

Hi Adam! Nice work!

I'm actually about to shoot a music video with back projections on my EX1, and have a few technical questions:

Did you have any issues with flicker or rolling scanlines with the projector? If so, how did you go about eliminating them?

What kind of projector do you reccomend? DPL/LCD etc? What exact one did u guys use (so I can check out it's specs...)?

What settings did you use on the ex1? Shutter, flicker-reduction etc...

We are planning to shoot with a letus extreme, which will steal a bit of light. Do you think that will give us issues (as you mentioned you did some shooting on 12db gain...)?

I'd appreciate it very much if you took the time to answer these questions.

No worries bro, some people are never fans.
I guess that's not really an issue, since I'm not a fan of some peoples work too.. LOL.

We're all entitled to our opinions.

I would not change a thing Adam. It looks great.

I used this projector: Sanyo's PLC-XF47

But I would recommend going with the brightest thing you can get. I know of some rigs that stack 2 projectors to achieve some very bright results. Check with outdoor display companys in your area, the kind that do projections on the side of buildings for events etc.

A DLP projector would be beter than I used as the brightest ones are brighter but more expensive.

I found the most difficult part was finding the plastic backdrop and hanging it (I found a place that sold 4 meter wide rolls of floor underlay). You need to play with different materials. Frosted plastic (like shower curtains) catch the light better and give a much cleaner image on the backdrop.

I went with a clearer plastic as I wanted the light to spill through the plastic, hitting the band and giving some back light.

Another thing I played with was spraying water on the plastic as it made the images sparkle a bit. It was a fun job keeping it wet for the whole shoot :-)

I did not have scanning or flicker problems. for non slo mo I was shooting 25P with the shutter on 50 but I played with it a bit on different shots. overall it is very simple to shoot once you get the rear projection rig working.

Make sure you leave a day for testing and a day or two between the testing day and the shoot.
