EX1 in an MRI?

So,

A client booked me for a shoot on wednesday and it turns out the shoot is in an MRI lab. I'm assuming they are going to want me to shoot in there while the machine is going. Does anyone have any experience with this? Will it even work? Would it be bad for my camera? any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Colin

I had a similar shoot last year. A robotics company hired me to shoot a video of their
prototype device, that remotely performed surgery inside an MRI.

No metal or electronics was allowed within about 12 feet of the machine. This presented a challenge in getting shots to say the least. Here's what we did.

1. Use a long lens. If you're shooting with the EX-3, you'll have lens options. If it's the EX-1, a x2 extender is very useful if you have to shoot someone in the MRI. That's what we did.

2. Set up a mirror. We purchased a cheap plastic mirror from Walmart for $10 so we could get a shot of the inside of the MRI machine. We placed in on the "bed" that feeds into the machine and shot from a high angle (a tripod on a table behind the line).

You may not need any of that, but they were useful tools. The key thing to remember (and what the technicians kept telling me) is that an MRI machine's electromagnetic field is active even when the machine if off. So you can't cross that line with you gear at any time without putting it at risk.

One more thing. For the interview, I actually put a radio mic on the doctor and shot through the glass from inside the control room. It was a really nice shot.

Hope that helps.

P.
