Ex1 3d

Hello

A friend of mine is going to get an EX1 along with me.. So i was thinking of getting the two cameras together and try to do some 3d shoot. Are the cameras too large to have the lenses near each to other?

Also, anyone know the workflow to edit and export the video so that you get a video file with polarised 3d? Overlaying the video files over each other? or can it be done only with 2 projectors?

(the kind you need polarised glasses, not the red and green ones, ive done that test already with cheaper cameras and it worked but dont like red-green glasses 3d too much)

I don't think you'll be entirely successful with dual system 3D on the EX1 because it can't be genlocked and hence the two eyes will be out of sync.

Also, the camera is a bit wide for a typical interocular distance. And it will be really difficult to match the focal lengths of the lenses.

All nausea inducing stuff!

And unfortunately, you can't polarize video unless you project it - hence the necessity of using a system like red-green or LCD glasses, or two projectors, or one projector with a setup like this:

I've been doing some experimentation with 2 HVX's. Its a long haul and there are plenty of tech problems but its doable and fun. I don't feel at liberty to explain what our solution was for the projection because I didn't develop it. What i can tell you is we used two projectors with polarizers. The trick is to get the two video streams in sync on the two projectors.

Genlocking was not an issue BTW. The width of the interlocular distance was an issue I think though. You can do it with two cameras mounted side by side though. It just creates an eccentric very wide look and doesn't always fuse but it generally looked cool. I really dig it and hope to do more.

Where are you guys located?

You could get lucky with non-genlocked cameras (60p would be the best and probably workable) but 24p at the worst case scenario of 1/2 frame out of sync and you'll be vomiting before too long.
