EX compression at 720p24 35 Mbps hvx is 40 Mbps soooo.

[Nik Manning]

Ok for the folks comparing the hvx200 to the EX don't they have about the same datarate at 720p24? Isn't the hvx200 datarate at 720p24 only 40 Mbps and EX 35 Mbps. I don't understand how folks can for one second say that the dvcprohd codec is better than the sony mpeg2 codec. At those datarates the EX has a waaaaaay better codec. It just hit me that most people shot 720p on the hvx and if they did that on the EX they would have the holy grail. hdv is 4:2:0 and dvcprohd is 960x720 so they are pretty even in that regard. I almost never say this but good job sony.

You are correct. The HVX codec scales with image size, the EX1 does not.

35Mbps GOP has got to beat 40Mbps intraframe by a wide margin.

Considering the EX1 has larger chips and costs nearly 25% more than the HVX I would sure hope it would have a better image.

[Nik Manning]

True it should have a better image but I believe some folks are under the impression it is 35 Mbps being compared to 100 Mbps. It just dawned on me today that it was only 40 Mbps.

[Luis Caffesse]

It just dawned on me today that it was only 40 Mbps.

At 720P/24, sure - and at 1080/24 it's 80Mbps.
But - like you were pointing out in the original post - it's not all about bitrate.
That's just part of the equation.

[ezpop]

...and at 1080/24 it's 80Mbps.
.

that would be awesome
