I had a chance to mess around with the EX-1 recently. Great, SOLID camera.

i know a lot of people were in question regarding the "flash/strobe" problem and wanted to see more footage, so BOOM! enjoy.

I don't hang out with paparazzi, so i don't think this problem will affect me that much!

Damn!

Well even if it didn't have that effect it shows that a lame flash pointed at the camera is something I would have post work to do with any camera. This is a post job even with a ccd camera. I could make the flash more dramatic with some punch to it. The unreal but movie real flash. Knoll light factory with or without rolling shutter.

If it was CCD there would be a fat white line running down the frame called vertical smear, and in real life you wouldnt frame a flash light like that looking into the thing.

How is it possible to shoot 60FPS and have a 1/48 shutter?

Did you mean 60FPS and 1/60 shutter?
...or it looks like the "shutter is off with the bottom lit first and the top lit one frame later.

A check of the file shows it's playing at 24 FPS. It would be interesting to see a file that plays at 60 FPS and shows 60p with shutter off.

Thanks,

Bob Diaz

Do events and award shows qualify as "real life" for you?
Or what about using a strobo flash in a music video?

I mean you wouldnt stick the camera inside the flash light like that, that is the worse case scenario, it isnt always that bad. There are pros and cons to different chips, CMOS has a lot of advantages but rolling shutter/partial exposure is the only disadvantage.

What's funny is that Dobi isn't trying to discredit the EX-1, he's just havin' fun with somethin' he already new existed.

And, check out the defensive EX-1 clan. Tsk.

No defense here. It's actually kind of funny!
Partial exposures suck, but that's only ONE of the CMOS issues.
Skew & wobble are not pretty.

Of course noisy images also suck and the Sony fairs well here along with rez and latitude.

It's all about what you're willing to live with and the percentage of time these issues may affect you.

Wow, that's interesting footage! Thanks for posting it. I am buying the camera for wilderness adventure so flash isn't an issue for me, but if it was, this appears to be a serious consideration. I wonder if the flash was further in the distance if the effect wouldn't be so strong? That flashing camera is very close to the lens.

Whats even funnier is no one has said anything about Dobi's test being an attempt to discredit the ex1. Just you trying to stir the pot. Can't we have a discussion without you jumping in and trying to start something?

This is you being defensive.

=D You post on a forum, expect others to comment. I'm simply statin' that Dan's just havin' fun.

You can't seem to discern the difference between a personal observation from defensiveness. You seem to know what my intent is. How amazing of you. Always throw the defensive attack out when you're drowning to grab onto something. You know Kholi I'm gonna put you on ignore.

Buck - please don't let this footage question you from buying the camera AT ALL. I back this camera 110%, I think it's AMAZING. If you're doing a wilderness adventure (which you should consider bringing me along  ), i would say THIS IS your camera.

This flash issue REALLY isn't that big of a deal considering A.) how often do you see flashes and B.) if NEED BE, you can fix the images in post (time consuming yes, but def possible).

Get the camera and get ready to enjoy it !

Thanks, dandobi... as you say, the flash strobing is not a concern/consideration for me because hopefully I won't be encountering very many flashing bulbs deep in the wilds, ha! I'm just pointing out the obvious, I guess, by saying if someone was going to use this camera 'primarily' in situations where there would be lots of cameras flashing, especially at close range, this wouldn't seem to be a strong choice (just basing it off your flash footage... it's the only one I've seen so far).

I do appreciate seeing footage such as what you posted. That way if I do happen to be in a situation where I saw this happen I won't freak out so much (AHHHHH!) and I'll approach the subject knowing that funky strobing can occur. All cameras have strengths and weaknesses and knowing these strong/weak traits will help create optimum results. Gracias Senor.
