EX-1 broken bottom plate

Good afternoon Gents, my EX-1 took a tumble while on a tripod and the bottom plate broke. It broke my heart, I have tried gorilla glue to put it back together but that did not work. Do you guys have anymore ideas on how to either fix the bottom plate or how to mount the camera to the tripod securely that does not involve gaffers tape?

The thing broke and saved your camera from a bigger ding- exactly as it is designed to do!

Im sure sony can source you another one - four screws to fit it?

Get a Juiced Link baseplate. Thank us later - we'll wait. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I've got a Juiced Link baseplate on my EX1-R and I've never looked back.

Im not so sure.

The plate on the Sony Im sure is made weak on purpose. Sony people are not stupid.

Consider this, tripod knocked over, the cam hits the deck and snaps off the sticks - that is actually what you want because the final impact on the camera is less.

A broken plate is great if it means no damage to the main chassis of the camera alignment of the lens etc.

I second the suggestion of getting the aftermarket plate.

The existing camera plate is not made to be weak on purpose.

It's made that way by Sony to save on production costs.

The bottom plates on both EX1 and EX3 are a known weakness.

The threads often strip out as well making mounting the camera to a tripod next to impossible.

There are several companies which make a good aftermarket plate.

Well worth the investment.

Which is why the SXS access door on the EX1R is a lot more flimsy than the door on the EX1 that preceded it. If the door got stuck on something or dinged, the early model that had a door that felt beefy and secure required a partial strip-down to fix. The newer flimsy one was quite an easy fix. I still don't like it though. LOL

But as for the baseplate, I've seen too many EX3s with bits of tape or plastic wodged between it and a tripod plate, I've had both EX1 and EX1Rs work themselves loose on the base plate for fear of overtightening. YOU COULD SEE DAYLIGHT under the camera when attached to a tripod, and that makes it a very weak point indeed.

I'm a great fan of the Juiced Link plate as I can use two 1/4-20 screws, it won't spin or get wobbly, and whilst I know that in theory we should all remove our cameras from the sticks when transporting them, how many times do we break that golden rule? Really?

I want my camera 'in the saddle' with as much surface area in contact as possible - that's what the Juiced Link plate provides (especially as it's connected by a couple of other bolts into the chassis). The EX1/3 design was an odd one because it was a 'prosumer' design done by the broadcast unit, which lead to some curious and contrary results.
