EVF Detail?

Hi, how is the EVF Detail function supposed to look? i film alot against greenscreen and i cant get a proper focus sometimes because its a bit tricky to se focus against the greenscreen. But in the dvx book i read about a function called evf dtl, but when i turn it on i dont see anything different. i film in 25p with a pal dvx and uses manual focus.

With the detail peaking function on, you'll see a very (and I mean VERY) slight highlight or shimmer to things that are in proper focus. You'll have to play around with this until you notice the effect. Try focusing on something highly reflective (like a c-stand) with the function off, then turn it on to see the difference.

ahh.. i thought it was supposed to be a white outline around the object in focus. Thanx for the help horse

The trick is to close your eyes while trying to focus then open them quickly and you'll see exactly the same thing. This is where EVF comes in handy. :)

Just kidding! This is too subtle and it takes some practice. I think they should have made it with a bold highlight IMHO.

I don't think that the detail function is subtle at all!

Try using it with a focus chart or when doing an eye focus, its really easy to see its effect under these types of conditions.

I beg to differ here. Yes, you can see it. But, it's not an obvious thing at first. A focus chart is not always handy for run and gun type of shooting. Again, if that little razor thin line around the edges was a little thicker it would help a million. Just saying it could be a little easier. That's all.

Oh well we will have to agree to disagree on this one.

I think it is so far from a subtle that if it were any stronger of effect it would become much less useful! I would prefer a two step function, one at the current level and one with much less effect to allow for even more accurate focusing. I find that in some cases I have to toggle it on and off to get spot on focus.

Good thing it is on a button and not buried in some stupid menu.

I HATE menus!

Once you know what it looks like it's easy to see.

Here's what I recommend for a test -- get absolutely perfect focus on something, almost doesn't matter what it is. Then just toggle the EFV DTL button on and off. You should see a very noticeable difference between when it's on and when it's off.

Barry,
I do see it. But, I'm always having trouble keeping wide shots in complete focus. Say you're 10 miles away from a mountain -- there's only so much you can actually zoom in. This is where I wish I would get better results. Maybe it's a matter of practice.

Small 1/3" standard-def camcorders don't do well with wide shots. There's only so much detail in the frame. You should be focusing on "infinity" in that circumstance anyway.

Do you use the focus assist button with the evf detail? Using both in conjunction can really make a difference in your ability to get a good focus via lcd or viewfinder.

If you turn on evf detail, it stays on. Even when you turn the camera off and back on. evf detail is still on.

Not for me. When I turn off the camera then back on it goes away. That's weird. Is there a place in the menu where I can control that?

I'll check it out when I get home.

almost sounds like different models of cameras here.
Peaking on my 100B really stands out. I find that I have quite a bit of focussing range before it goes in and out. Seems like too much room for error---like it should be a bit more selective within the focussing range.

Sorry to bring topic back fromt eh dead, but-

On the A models the peaking seems to stay on- on the B we just got it turns off whenever the power is cycled- I cant seem to find a way for it to stay on- is this just something we have to live with?
