EVERYTHING'S EVENTUAL: A Stephen King short story adaptation (Production Diary)

That's a wrap!!!

Everything's Eventual, the first feature length Dollar Baby is complete! The DVDs are in the mail and on the way to King in Maine, I expect he will receive them on Monday.

After 14 months it is finally finished. The film has turned out great and it has exceeded all of my expectations. Thank you to all of the cast, crew, and other individuals who helped make this film possible. I will post more details as they arise.

It's Done!!!

Congratulations on completing your movie and submitting it to SK. The only movie I've seen based on a SK story I remember is MISERY. Of course, they had James Caan in that movie and that was a feature film.

With this short story you have opened a door for yourselves to be associated with an established writer with a huge following. The amount of effort you have put into it is astounding. If you can do this for one of your own stories and then get a name actor in the movie, who knows what you guys can accomplish?

This is an incredible effort.

I watched the trailer. I hope you guys fixed the voice on the telephone in the final movie. Also, the drum beat makes it almost impossible to hear what is being said. And the cough at the beginning has to go. You should smooth out the sound over the titles. There is a "wait" while the titles are being displayed for the audience to read; it's not good. Otherwise, the trailer is very impressive.

Break a leg :-)

Thanks! This film is feature length too, I'm not sure if it beats Misery though :)

Yes, I am very excited to see what happens with this film and where it takes all those involved.

The sound for the final film turned out very well. It was mixed by an experienced pro who has done features here in town. The trailer was something that myself and the editor rushed out because we felt we had to give more than just "screen grabs" and we were pretty overwhelmed with the work so we didn't put as much into it as we wanted to. But we will probably fix some picture and a lot of sound stuff now that the film is done. But I just hope you see the film because it blows the trailer away (of course I am biased ;) ) but I truly think we have a serious chance at impressing some important peeps.

I hope you get a chance to see it!

EE update (4-14-10)

EE update (4-14-10)

To the cast, crew, friends and fans of Everything's Eventual:

It has been about six months since Everything's Eventual was completed and sent to Stephen King. And what a journey it has been since then! As many of you know, but a lot of you may not, Stephen King viewed the film. Not only that, he enjoyed it! So much so that he allowed the project to pursue an unprecedented commercial release. Specifically, Mr. King wanted the film to acquire major "theatrical" distribution. He even went as far as to use some of his considerable industry clout to get the film on the desks of three huge distribution studios (Lion's Gate, Summit, and Overture) for their consideration.

This is the reason why I have been relatively quiet regarding the film's status for the last 5 months. It is also the reason why the film has not been entered into any film festivals as of yet. I am sorry for keeping many of you in the dark but hopefully you all understand. The film needed to run this course before anything could be announced and before being submitted to film festivals.

Unfortunately, all of the studios have passed on theatrically distributing the film and Mr. King is not interested in alternative distribution (ie. direct to video/DVD distribution). With this in mind, I also requested the "option" or rights to remake Everything's Eventual only this time without the limitations of the Dollar Baby agreement (which forbids commercial exploitation from the start). The option too was not meant to be in the end. Mr. King respectfully declined my request to remake the film for theatrical release. So my friends, it appears that the film's commercial exploits have come to an end.

This all may seem like bad news but there is a silver lining. Since the film seems to have run it's "commercial (for profit)" course, it is now time for Everything's Eventual to be seen by the masses at film festival venues all over the country and possibly the world! Film festival exhibition is, after all, the primary intention of King's "Dollar Deal". So, this is not the end for Everything's Eventual but a new beginning! I plan to submit the film to many, many film festivals in the next year starting almost immediately. If any of you are interested in helping the film on it's festival journey, please contact me. I am in particular need of some one who has a lot of festival experience/knowledge that would be willing to educate me on the best way to get the film into as many festivals as possible.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved with this project. Whether you are, cast, crew, friend or fan, your support is what made the film possible. I hope I have honored all of you with this film which is as much yours as it is mine. It could not have been made without you. And thank you Mr. King for the opportunity. It was great fun and it did for me exactly what the Dollar Baby program is meant to do. I have grown and matured immensely as a filmmaker and as a person throughout the last year and a half. I am proud of what the film, my first feature, has been able to achieve. I look forward to the future with excited anticipation and without regret.

So, one door has closed and another has opened. Another chapter is completed but the book remains unfinished. I think the film still has some surprises for us all. I hope to hear back from many of you and I can't wait to see some of you at Arizona festivals in the future! Please feel free to ask any questions that you might have, I am happy to answer them. As always, thank you for your undying support for the film.

Sincerely,

J.P. Scott

Awesome. I always heard King was very easily persuaded to sell his stories to be made into movies. I didn't have time to read the entire post but I've heard he sells them to promising filmmakers for $1. We'll you guys sure turned out to be promising and I hope it didn't cost an arm and a leg to get produced. Congratulations and Good Job. Very Exciting Stuff.

Hey, you got your film seen by three major studios. That's huge. I'm sure that'll be great for the prospect of the films you make in the future.

Looking forward to Everything's Eventual eventually (see what I did there?) coming to a festival near me.

I've heard he sells them to promising filmmakers for $1.

Yes, but with King does not sell the "rights" for $1 instead he gives permission to adapt from a short story of his. The catch is that the film is "non-commercial" and cannot make money or be sold in anyway. It is meant for professional reels and film festival exhibition.

What we did with our film is impress King enough to convince him to give the film a shot at commercial viability. For a short time I have had the "theatrical movie rights" to King's short story Everything's Eventual.

Recently submitted EE to the Fantasia Film Festival. Would be a great place to premiere the film if we were to get accepted. Wish us luck! We will continue to submit to festivals and keep you guys updated.
