Everything's amazing, nobody's happy

"Give it a second! It's going to space!" EPIC!
Of course, cell phones do not "go" into space. They "go" to a nearest transmitter/receiver tower. Satellite phones are still too large and expensive to be made as handheld devices. They look more like sergeant Murtaugh's mobile phone (remember the scene when he calls to a shrink from a bridge?).

It's weird as I've been an early adopter of tech for a long time...I remember that the effort in sending an E-mail involved me dialing up with a horriblly slow modem to a bulletin board locally. I would send the E-mail. At this point it would stay in a que until late at night nwhen nthe bulletin board would call another BB, that BB would call another....down and down the line, until finally the one guy with access would send the message....then it would be that entire process in reverse! it'd take days to get a response.

Then other then this, even once I had inet(91-92) I was limited in the amount of time I could be online(or I would incur an additional fee), as well as the amount of E-mails I could send....and back then if you had a cell phone it cost a small fortune to own and have service, and you had to drive to a certain area of town just to call someone.....

Our world is amazing!

I used to play Oregan Trail on a crappy apple....now I can run around in 3d environments and watch the head of my oponent explode in glorious realistic fashion!

Our world IS amazing! lol

Seriously, though. Cell phones suck. They work only in proximity of a tower, good luck having these towers in a desert or a canyon or tundra. And do you really want to have towers in a desert? What a sight that would be.

The whole idea of cell phone is ok for city use, but is not well suited for less dense areas. Hopefully, satellite phones will make the abomination we know as cell phone a history.

Personally I think people have too much of a dependence on cell phones...I have one, I have a half dozen computers, pen+paper, stamps, land line phones, caller ID, Hi-Def TV's, Crap loads of video equipment...I can deal with a little bit of an outage...and blissfully anticipate it!

well, in California, we have fake palm trees that are essentially cell towers...there are some pretty big damn cacti in the desert...that would be a sight to see haha

just noticed you're in San Diego too....drive around and look...they're out there

I can't remember what comedian said this... maybe Patton Oswald... but just like ipods... I think I'm the only one still amazed at how they work. I was fortunate enough to have one of the first walk-man cassette players (due to a generous brother who got it over-seas)... and I thought that thing was SO cool... and at the time I was the only one who had one... it played cassettes and was just a little bigger then a cassette case.

These days I doubt most kids would even know what a "cassette" is...

There's some amazing sh*t in the world right now... but I gotta' say... I truly appreciate this stuff... and look at it with a sense of wonder (about what the future may hold)... I appreciate my cell phone too... and for the most part... it works great. I don't even HAVE a home line anymore...

My six year old daughter had to undergo a very minor operation, and when we were in the hospital waiting room, they had a VCR with some tapes of kid movies. I had to explain to my daughter what a VHS tape was, and she didn't understand why it had to be rewound. It also looked like crap. I can't believe we used to watch that junk!

Yes I know thnx, I've had to drive through West, TX on I-10 on the way back from helping a friend move to LA back in my music days and BOY DID I WISH I HAD A SATELLITE PHONE! Nothing but dust bowls, border patrol and the occasional cowboy trying to score coke from us... I think that's how I came up with my nickname. I don't think I look like I deal coke, but whatever SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND :kali:
