Hey you know im pretty lax.. but I have been getting some complaints by the lines that are being crossed, even here in the Cafe..

So please, just tone it down a bit. Dont be having Adult Avatars or posting clearly offensive remarks or statements.

We wanna keep everyone happy, but we need some kinda common courtesy to start flowing again, as things have gone in the toilet by a few people lately.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

DVXUser is know for its friendliness, technical expertise, and high "signal to noise ratio".  The easiest path to keep it that way is for everyone to self-moderate their posts.

The focus of DVXUser.com is on the DVX100, digital video, and filmmaking. Please think twice before posting something political, violence, or sexual-related.  Occasional posts are ok as long as they're not offensive, but please don't abuse the open nature of the board.  Thanks.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

now we are talking.. this is what its all about.. posts like this.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

Agreed. I've never found a board that has the friendly atmosphere like this one. A little self-moderation would go a long way towards keeping it that way! :)

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

I spoke about when I was a bondsman and how i would collect (legally) and was reprimanded.. Sorry if i hurt someones feelings, or offened anybody

I also am a little controversial when i speak about politics. im not sorry about anything i have said there.. but i will tone it down and that way no ones lil' feelings will be hurt. So dont expect any more of my commentary..

i realize that all sounds sarcastic but i just cant believe with the things I have said that someone would actualy complain to the owner of this forum.... So from now on ill keep it to my birthday, or what setting i use with my DVX.. and everyone will be happy..

Im pissed off about it ..As you can tell.. I of course mean no dis-respect to the owner of this forum or anyone else listening.. :)

I have been asked to keep it professional...To be professional we would never talk about politics.. So professional i will be.. nothing controversial whatsoever..makes for a better forum...

Hope everyone is happy..  ;D

My 2c

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

In the cafe.. you can be political just dont be a jackass about it. Politics have a way of getting people emotional and reved up, and they start calling people idiots for POVs. And that is the part I dont like.. not the Politics but the Nasty name calling that results from it.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

I agree with all the above..please give a little leaway to Hudson's expressions..he has me rolling most of the time.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

yeah.. John says things in humour.. not offensively :) The forum just wouldn't be the same without Mr. Hudson :)

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

:D

I am here for your viewing entertainment. But I do agree with JArred and everyone else. Lets pull it back a little and have some self control. I am the first to LAX out and say things that maybe I shouldnt. :-/ :D

Honestly I just try and be myself and have fun but am the first to admit that I can cross the line with the best of them (Hell, I lead the charge usually). That being said, I'll chill out too!

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

It is possible to talk about politics without resorting to name calling. Except for outright neo-nazi and klansmen spouting racist drivel, people can discuss it like adults.

I believe we should all personally adopt rules of netiquette:

1) The first person who calls a name is the one in the wrong. That is the person who should be censured by us all, and not merely by Jarred.

2) If you claim the world is flat on a forum, you had better be ready to back it up politely and in a sane manner. Claiming everyone else is morons for not seeing that the world is flat is not how to carry on an adult conversation.

3) People who become personally abusive or irate when disagreed with need to leave the Internet all together.

4) Be man enough to say sorry if you get misunderstood and explain what you meant.

5) Do not reply to people who have a history of unstable posting. Unstable does not mean putting forward unpopular ideas, but a history of saying "up yours your mother is a hoar" when you bring forward a contradictory fact.

6) Do not nitpick spelling or punctuation. Many people from foriegn countries, with disabilities, or of different age groups spell and punctuate poorly in English. If you truly do not understand the sentence, ask politely.

7) Do not drive by or troll. A drive by is a single post to a topic that you are not participating in saying, "you suck" or posting a known controversial topic without being willing to stick around and politely discuss the issues (Vegas sucks!).

8) Do not stalk. Stalking is taking a conflict from one forum discussion to another and essentially saying, "Ralph sucks, he claimed Vegas sucks so I am going to make him pay in every other thread he visits". Stalkers earn no respect, and merely show that a person is a bit sick in the head.

9) Dislikes outside of a forum stay there. If you both play Doom III, and get into a fight in that forum, then it stays in the Doom III forum. Dragging personal vendettas across different forums is low and petty.

10) People say things that are wrong, get over it. I corrected Jared about depth of field. He corrected me on locked audio. A professional is not someone who knows everything, but someone who knows that they have a lot to learn.

Just my opinion on some basic netiquette rules.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

This is great that things will be calming down here...everyone's right that the forum's been getting a little uncomfortable lately.

"Back in the day, I remember when us forumers would..." ;D

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

Slapdragon, I must respectfully disagree with some of the things on your list. It reads more like a list of personal pet peeves than something that's objective and enforceable.

For one thing, regular people know all kinds of stuff that they can't explain or even back up. Some things we hear on the news or read in the paper. A trusted friend or relative may say something that we accept as fact. Uneducated people should be allowed to debate what they think or know or read or heard on the news. Just because most people don't have a library of reference material to "back up" their opinions doesn't make them wrong. I say if you accuse someone of lying or being wrong, the burden or proof should land on your shoulders.

Politics should not be brought up in a community that comes together in the name of film production. Politics always has and always will divide people no matter what kind of rules you'd like to try and invent. If you really care about getting along with people, you should try and keep your political views to yourself... just like I've learned to do when I visit my grandparents.

Slapdragon, unfortunately most people don't speak like you... including me. I was raised around poor people and uneducated people and it kinda rubs off. You may have the vocabulary to basically call someone a lying dog and still sound elegant, but all someone like me can conjure up is "you suck".

It's easy to correct people on things that are factual without offending them. I corrected Barry on lighting... he forgot about diffuse surfaces. Why would he take offense when it was simply a factual mistake. However, there are no facts when it comes to history unless you were there. There are only biased interpretations. Why are all interpretations biased? Because it's not humanly possible to record every single thing that ever happened or even report all the information that you have access to. You must pick and choose information and report it how you see it. That's biased and there's no way around it. Suggesting that someone is lying when their information doesn't match your information is just ignorant. If you believe in God, he is the only person that actually sees all sides of an event and knows what really happened for a FACT.

Some people just want to argue because they're bored, it's fun, and they don't have to worry about getting punched on a message board. It's too easy to see someone on a message board as an object and not a person. It's just too easy to argue on a message board. That's why divisive things shouldn't be brought up. I'll admit it... it's fun to get into a heated debate. Is it good for the forum... no. It's degrading to the forum and it makes it look like a childish hellhole when it's really not.

Oh well, I could say more, but this post is too long as it is. Slapdragon, seriously, it's not possible for you to bring up your political views without offending someone. Your attitude in regards to Hiroshima and Nagasaki offends me. There are political message boards that a debate could be taken too if necessary. Just say, "let's take it outside!"

Not really, it is a relisting of the USENET basic concepts of Netiquette first posted by some guy at UCAL.

Incorrect. The maker of a statement has the responsibility in human society (at least human society more advanced than caveman) of supporting the statement. The reason is simple. It is easy to spout endless nonsense, and everyone then has to run around spending effort to refute the nonsense. Better off if the person who is making up the stories tell everyone how they know the world is flat. That way everyone can tell if they are full of it and should be ignored, or simply reading too many mad magazines.

A quick read of some of the offending sections shows that politics was not really ever brought up. A guy says "happy fourth of july." pretty innocent, and gets called an ass. The person who says happy fourth is not at fault, he honestly felt that he was in the company of adults and made a honest attempt at adult conversation. The people who wanted to turn that into an issue was a problem.

I do. I have never mentioned my political views on this forum to date.

My family were dairy farmers without much education. But we learned not to say "**** you" or "you suck" to people we disagree with. And if we did not, then I think they covered that in first grade. Polite behavior is exactly that, polite behavior.

This is incorrect based on your previous discussions (which is why I assume you are bringing this up in this forum right now rather than "taking it outside" as you later advise". In our previous discussion, you made some assertions that you were not present to observe and claimed they were more valid than the understanding of historians who intervieed hundreds or thousands of eye witnesses, read tens of thousands of primary source documents, examined thousands of pieces of physical evidence, and supported their conclusions with this evidence. When you made these assertions, they treaded on an area of valid discussion for this forum, and that is how we know what we know, part of a discussion on how to be a documentary director -- something I am very interested in.

Do you really want a lecture on semiology and the nature of objective and subjective understanding in modern society?

Not if adults follow adult methods of discussion. For some people, I agree, that is not possible. I merely think that when discussing issues of how to create documentary or news materials, that perhaps the issue is not that human beings cannot discuss this (which would be strange because I had very extensive discussions last year with many filmmakers at Toronto last year, and will do so at AEJMC this year in Toronto, and no one called be a ****er or a freak or tried to punch me.)
Oh well, I could say more, but this post is too long as it is. Slapdragon, seriously, it's not possible for you to bring up your political views without offending someone.
I have never brought up any political views on this forum.

Then you should not participate in any discussion where this subject comes up if you are unable to handle it, although I cannot imagine where it would come up, except in connection to a documentary on the subjects. Remember, you brought up these subjects originally in a discussion and then got upset when you were corrected by a simple quote from a history textbook.

In any case, my post was merely a repost of basic netiquette designed to facilitate adult conversations.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

*sigh* Where is this netiquette you speak of? If your interpretation is accurate, it seems flawed.

Slapdragon, there's a lot of stuff in your post that you happened to say to me while we were arguing, so it appeared to be aimed at me without actually saying so. That's why I brought up old stuff.

Do you really have to take every single sentence that I write and refute each one by one? Seems a little contentious. Oh well, I still think that politics, religion, and other personal things that people feel passionate about should be banned as topics for discussion.

I posted a discussion of netiquette and adult posting manner that did not mention you directly or indirectly.

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

I’ve been around the Internet for a very long time now and in all those years I’ve never joined a forum/board until DVSUser. The boards that I would have an interest in were filled (not all obviously, but more times that not) with sporadic, off topic insults and all around bad manors so I never bothered and I was content to just ‘watch’. I’ve as recently as today seen a ‘respected’ moderator on another board attack a member for a not-so-informed remark (in his opinion).

IMO, one of the greatest things about the Internet and one of the goals at the onset of its creation was to allow communication and sharing of ideas between those with similar interest. I for example can’t relate to anyone personally in my circle of acquaintances with anything regarding photography, videography etc let alone a specific capture device like the DVX. Would I like too? Sure but it’ll never happen, that’s why it’s such a different world than it was before things like this forum were possible. I’ve got this place, which not only keeps me informed, entertained and motivated, but it’s also an outlet so that I can relate to like-minded people regarding film and video. However, just as in real life it’s impossible to find 2 people let alone hundreds that are on the same page when it comes to belief systems or politics.

And then another layer to this forum (the “Café”) adds even more value. To read the same person who just posted an excellent video or broke down a technological mystery for all of us pop out a joke or an opinion on a film, etc is outstanding. It makes everyone a bit more ‘approachable’ (virtually speaking of course) and loosens things up so that I for instance don’t have as much apprehension about asking a dumb question (I’m really good at that sometimes, ask Barry G)

Even within my own family and friends I never discuss religion or politics. Belief systems and opinions just can’t be argued imo (unless I wanted to alienate those around me which is guaranteed what would happen, the contrasts in my circle of friends and acquaintances are quite stark). It’s the very same here, I frankly don’t care what your personal beliefs are regarding politics, etc. That’s just to personal and completely your business not to mention absolutely irrelevant to our ability to relate here.

The fact that this topic was even brought up shows a clear difference from other boards. I really, really enjoy this forum and the information here is priceless and it’s the people and the attitudes that make the difference for me.

I’m definitely guilty of some bad language and I stalked a guy once (he was doing the drive by thing with smiley face icons only and I got impatient, that’s no excuse, will not happen again.)

This place rocks! (That was the short version)

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

...aside from 2-pop. (when it was alive) this is the only board ive participated in. 2-pop was kept freindly cause it had to be for all its corporate sponsorships and such, and therefore it was a nice environment. but shortly after DVXuser was born, i realized that it was going to be a much better place to call home. i stopped using the 2-pop forum abut a week later. the people here were more knowledgable.. pro.. with more personality.

..now this is THE place for DVX users, and independent filmmaking in general. in light of that, I have nothing but respect for Jarred making this call.

really, most stuff is fine, and can just be laughed off, or not viewed or read..(if given proper warning). but I also refer to or show potential clients, and other professionals things on this site that demonstrate the DVX(besides my own demo reel becuase they may want to see a certain look, or sort of production.. so i can ask "are you looking for somthing more like this..". and they say .."yes.. can you make it like that?".. anyway its very easy when they can visualise things..), or to give info on a certian concern or topic. as well as check the site from my workplace.
inappropriate things that pop up/out ::) on a page unexpectedly could cost me my clients, or my job.. and thats just not cool.

bottom line... everything has its own place and time. we just got to keep things in their place. :)

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

Look...™ the two of you (Tony & Slap) have a personality conflict... plain and simple.

With all due respect, you two would waste five pages of a thread trying to argue what toppings to order on your pizza.   ::)

Re: Everyone Read... we need to tone it down a bit

.. wait terry! theres that new pizza hut pizza that jessica simpson is spouting about.. they could get one of those!!

..it worked for the muppets :P
